It's been a long time coming but we finally have a release date for the third season of The Umbrella Academy, conveyed in a brief teaser (obnoxiously cropped for phones which his why I can't embed it): June 22!

I recently bought all three graphic volumes and I've been holding off from reading them until after the third season is out. I'm looking forward to reading them as soon as I can but I also can't wait to see how season 3 plays out!

I don't want to spoil anything so I'll just say I think you'll find it interesting to compare them. I'd be curious to see your thoughts after you do.

Yeah, I know there are some significant changes in the show, which I read about when the first season came out. The one benefit of having a shitty memory: I forgotten the specifics, just that there are changes.

Yup, I avoid them like the plague. Square videos for Facebook and Twitter, too.

But I looked: The announcement teaser only exists in phone shape and on YouTube. :scream:

I guess this is another way that I'm a grumpy old man.

We finally have a trailer...and everything looks chaotically, ridiculously fun!

I'm very happy Lila is returning! I wasn't sure if she would return or not, but she was a phenomenal addition to the cast last season and I can't wait to see more of her story.

I just finished my rewatch of the first two seasons. Like last time around, I have some lingering questions which a few I had after the first season, too, because season two didn't address most of them:
  • We still haven learned how Ben died. But I expect that'll come up at some point this season with the alternate, living Ben.

  • The origins of Reginald remain a mystery. We got some hints last season when he took off his human face and when the cabal suggest what he "really is," but those hints only brought more questions. I wonder if this season will address them head on or continue to leave it all ambiguous. Or if it'll address the fact he and his lover were both wearing human skinsuits in the season one flashback.

  • Curiously, we never did discover how Reginald learned about the apocalypse in the first place, as suggested in the first season, and the conclusion of season two clearly shows that the time traveling wasn't the reason for that foreknowledge. I wonder if that'll be addressed at all.

  • What caused the mysterious births in the first place? What happened to all of the other children that Reginald didn't find (or was unable to "obtain")? Why didn't they ever show up? I'll be very surprised if we don't get solid answers on this one considering the Sparrow Academy and all. But I wonder if they'll address the matter of what happened to those children in the original timeline. Perhaps similar to what happens to the Umbrella Academy graduates in this new timeline?

  • Speaking of the alternate Umbrella graduates, does Claire even exist in this timeline? It was suggested that much of what happened in Allison's life came from rumoring. Even if she didn't use her power to develop her relationship with Patrick, she almost certainly did to create her career that lead to that relationship.

  • After seeing the season two conclusion and learning about The Handler's machinations, I wonder if The Commission had some role in the creation of these children. If so, why? If not, what was The Handler's interest in Lila in that regards?

  • What is Reginald's actual interest in the dark side of the moon. Season one suggested Luther's mission was absolutely nothing, but season two hinted that Reginald actually does have some kind of interest in it. If so, what is it? Can't be a coincidence that the Moon had a direct role in the original apocalypse.

  • With that in mind, what was the purpose of Reginald helping Americans with their rocket missions (which incidentally lead to Pogo's sentience)?

  • How will Harlan's lingering powers from Vanya play out in this season now as a grown adult? Will his story play out similar to Looper, which I was reminded of the first time I saw season two?

  • I also wonder, but it seems unlikely, if we'll also older versions of Sissy and Raymond.
Again, I say all of this without having read the original graphic novels yet. I recently bought them but I've been holding off on reading them until after I watch season three. That said, I do know for instance that the graphic novels never addressed why Grace never gave Five a real name or why he didn't give himself one after leaving, so I don't expect the show will ever address it either at this point.

It's been so long since i saw the last season i will have big gaps but i can't wait to see that dysfunctional family again, chief amongst them Klaus.

I do love Klaus but I'm a bigger fan of Viktor and Lila. Part of why I loved Klaus was his relationship with Ben so I'm curious to see how develops without his ghost companion.

Two episodes in and I'm loving every minute.

A few initial thoughts:

Reginald did such a great job at raising the Sparrow Academy that they've turned the table on him and he's now completely kowtowed to them. There's clearly something more going on with the whole dynamic, what if the CCTVs all over the inside of the Academy. Plus, there's got to be a good reason why Ben is such a dickhead aside from just being such a dickhead.

I originally was going to complain about how Reginald was able to adapt a completely different set of children, but despite his claim that he did exactly that, it turns out all of the Umbrella graduates were never born because their mothers died before the simultaneous birthing event (I did notice during the reintroduction of the Academy the number of births was lower but I didn't think much of it). That said, how could Reginald know how to train them different without any details of how he trained them in the first place? I don't expect there will be an answer to that question, unless part of the mystery Reginald has the El-Aurian ability to sense the differences in the timeline.

But coming back to the birthing event, we get a new bit of information when see Ben's birth: Little glowing embers flying through the air that enter his mother's body...embers that look a lot like the ones Reginald released from a jar in the long time ago flashback of him. On a different note, it can't be a coincidence that Sissy died on the exact same day of the event.

Speaking of Sissy, I can't help but wonder if Callum Keith Rennie's character is a grown-up version of Harlan. He certainly appears to have some kind of powers and the way he uses different tapes of ambient sounds to block out overwhelming aural inputs is a classic autism coping device.

Lastly, I love how the show handled Viktor's coming out. As expected, Klaus, Five, and Diego just rolled with it, while Allison had a touching heart-to-heart conversation with him about who Viktor is and loving himself now. We haven't seen Luther's reaction yet but I imagine it'll be the same as his brothers.

Edit to add:

Fuck, yeah! I was right about Harlan!

...and then, unfortunately, my further speculation about him during his flashback sequence was also right: He caused the deaths of the Umbrella graduates' mothers. Fuck.

I also figured out long before Five did that an older version of himself was inside the Operations Bunker. Hell of a twist and a mind fuck. Oh, and Old Five's dying breath: Don't save the world. Fuck.

Oh, and it turns out that Reginald wasn't so much kowtowed, but outright drugged to make him more maleable. But there's something not right there and I thought we were going to get into with that weird White Buffalo Suite...and then Stanley accidentally kills Diego (and right after I jokingly thought that very thing would happen). Fuck.

How much more bonkers is this season going to get with the remaining six episodes?
