The Sims 3 Review & Rating Thread

How would you rate The Sims 3?

I'll point out an annoyance.

In TS2 when you had a car you could simply park it on a driveway space. (One car per driveway space).

Apparently, in TS3 there's no driveway space just a parking "bumper" (you know, those little bumps they put down to represent a parking space in mall paking lots?) Well, because of this there's "one car" per driveway. So no matter how long your driveway there's no way to park more than one car on it! So if you have a multiple-car household you'll need more than one of these parking bumpers.

Yeah, one thing I noticed as I was playing after making my post yesterday is that memories are missing! I really liked being able to see 'what made an impression' on my Sims. My sim had to throw a party for a promoted coworker (as a career challenge) and I couldn't really tell if she thought it was a success or not. It's probably something they'll address with an expansion, I'd imagine.

I didn't notice that. I know there are moods and moodlets, which are probably similar to memories. I'd like to point out that if you satisfy one of the "Wishes" or aspirations, you get Lifetime Happiness points that you can use to buy rewards later on (similar to TS2's Career and Aspiration rewards).

The game also comes with $10 worth of "simoleon points" (equivalent to 1,000) you can use/redeem at the Sims 3 store on-line. I used mine up to download additional objects (Decorative, Comfort, etc.).

I was thinking about pirating this one, but from what I hear it's not worth the money even if you get it for free.

Any response I would've had would've been... Warning worthy.

Anyway, I'm getting more into the groove of this game. I've not yet started a Sim been tinkering with the building tools. It's tough going back to such a limited set of doors/windows. I had so many lovely, beautiful windows in my old game.

There's only a HANDFULL of doors in this game! :(

I'm starting to like this game more as I play it. When I think about it, the graphics quality (even for the sims) isn't bad at all. Using the graphics menu option, I put the setting to "Highest Quality" for the sims, and after that, they didn't look like Second Life avatars anymore.

It appears testingcheatsenabled true still works (no "boolprop" needed when you type in the cheat code), although the choices are a bit limited. You have the option to modify careers, make friends, and be in a happy mood. Unfortunately, my favorite maxmotives from TS2 doesn't do the trick anymore, but if you try the testingcheatsenabled true, you Shift-click on the mailbox in front of the house, choose Make (blank) Happy, and Make Needs Static, that at least prevents the Needs (Hunger, Bladder, etc.) from going down. I haven' actually tried this approach, though it turned up in my Google search.

One other thing that I like is the Nude Patch, which I downloaded and installed tonight. ;)

EDIT:

Oh, Trekker, if you're not happy with the building selection, you might want to try the on-line Sims 3 store and download stuff for Build Mode. Haven't you used the 1,000 Simoleon points that came with the game? After you register on-line, you'll get a chance to redeem the points (a.k.a. the $10 reward card).

Also, motherlode still very much works. I like using this cheat when I want instant $50,000 simoleons to decorate or furnish a household. Heck, this is a sim game. Why limit yourself? ;)

Apparently the choice is similair to the Sims 2 base-game...

Overall i like it...
The zooming in-and-out from lot to neighbourhood is done well...
The gardening and fishing work...
The posibility to change the pattern/fabric of everything is also cool and practical limitles when it comes to combinations...

There are some free items in the store and a free car to download:

For those not living in America that get a 404, just go to the bottom left of the page for the language selection and select english -> America and the correct page loads...

Oh I've cheated on the money aspect since the first time I got the original Sims. The game gives you all this wonderful stuff to buy and do... which costs money. And the process of getting the money is tedious and monotonous. Realistic to life - sure, but I have a real life to monotonously earn money. On The Sims, I want a mansion!

Well, I don't think that cheat works (shazaam - I tried it and nothing seemed to happen). I did get some Lifetime Reward points, but they were from the achievements or actions by the sims.

UPDATE: I couldn't edit what I posted earlier about the saving feature. Actually, you DON'T need to name or rename the file/neighborhood every time you save it after a game. The default neighborhood is Sunset Valley; thus all sims/households/lots you create within that neighborhood (including the ones that have been pre-made) are saved together under Sunset Valley--unless you create a new game using, say, a different neighborhood name on the Main Menu. Creating new sims, moving in and evicting households, and switching between active households are all done under Edit Neighborhood. (Initially, I thought I was supposed to create a new game every time I wanted to create a sim or switch between households; that part wasn't always clear to me, and it could've been better explained in the game manual.)

I bought this today on a whim, and then I proceeded to waste 6 hours of my night playing it.

It's fun, I suppose, but time moves way too quickly. It takes way too long for my Sim to respond to the commands I give him. "Take a bath." Okay, I'll take a bath, but first I'm going to stand here for 10 seconds. Then, once I get in my tub, I am going to stay there for an entire hour.

I'm sorry, but in real life, my showers take about 4 minutes. Stop wasting so much time.

I was thinking about pirating this one, but from what I hear it's not worth the money even if you get it for free.

:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Anyhoo...I've still not bought it, guys. But I'm reading your comments and have some questions/comments of my own.

1. Anyone try to build/decorate yet? Is build mode limited, or did they put most of the TS2 EP improvements into this base game?

Also, are the walls/floors and furnishings decent? Like, does anything actually MATCH? Or did they just put the usual stupid stuff in there, like lips sofas and walls that don't match a single floor in the portfolio?

I see that you guys think the doors/windows are lame...what about the stairs? Did they put spiral stairs in, or are they pulling that crap again where they are going to hold out such a simple convenience until the last EP? :p

2. Can you build apartments?

3. Bummer about the memories being missing. I used to love to torture sims I hated and watch all of their bad memories pile up.

4. Can't believe there is no weather.
....well, actually, I can. EA is the same company that no doubt leaves objects out of EPs intentionally so they can put them in stuff packs and charge $30 for them.

Hmm...I have played around a little with the build mode, but that's not usually my forte so I tend to keep it simple anyway. Yeah, choices are limited in terms of doors and windows. I'd imagine wall paper/paint can be made custom if you choose to take the time to do so.

I think the thing that people here have only touched on though is the options are LIMITLESS on coverings, at least I think. I wasn't very pleased with the color selections of the pre-loaded clothes (I play more with clothes than building or decoration) and there is SO MUCH you can do to change things it's just mind boggling. Two days later I'm still learning things. You can change fabric, the pattern, the color. You can even make custom hair colors with separate colors for different layers, custom eye color, make-up. So even though I was disappointed with the lack of height adjustment there is just so much else you can do to custom make your sim. Oh, not to mention the sim store where you can buy designs made by other simmers anyway.

So far I have NOT seen a way to build an apartment, but I imagine someone may have figured that out and will put a property up to download. Either that or again, yet another expansion. I would stick to the Sims 2 for that kind of game play. Some of the apartment elements are still in TS3, though, like visiting neighbors.

Yeah, weather, pets and university being missing is dissapointing, but like you said they purposefully left those for expansion packs unfortunately. Intersting thing is they HAVE left the 'young adult' stage so obviously uni is coming (and possibly there will be a choice to stay and be a young adult worker or go off to school?). I will say what they've added in exchange for those two things, the library, the bookstore, the theater, the parks, grocery store more than makes up for it at this point. Actually visiting areas OUTSIDE the house is so much more interesting and much more organic to the game (no more loading windows that take forever). It will be wonderful to see how they integrate weather into this game when it happens.

I love building and I'm tinkering with it in the game trying to get used to the new tools. It's... different. I'd almost say it's "worse" than S2.

Full flights of stairs are gone, only the connecting stairs remain, and you place them by choosing how wide you want them (1-8 tiles) and whether or not you want the railing. (If you choose no you can any railing you want manually.) Half-walls? Gone.

"Stages"/Split-Levels? Gone.

Roofs are trickier to build and can't be built over "nothing" (so, say, you can cross a gap between walls.)

And as I said before cars only park on a single "space" which is nothing more than a parking stall bumper on an "invisible driveway." You place this bumper anywhere (any angle, even diagonal!) and then "paint" a driveway in. However, as I said, it's impossible to build a multiple-car long driveway as the bumpers cannot block one another's path. (Even though as I understand it the game doesn't actually animate the car driving out of driveway.)

All objects can be manually recolored. You click on it and you can change it to any color you want and even change the "texture" of some items. (make it look like wood, metal, rock, etc.)

I see that you guys think the doors/windows are lame...what about the stairs? Did they put spiral stairs in, or are they pulling that crap again where they are going to hold out such a simple convenience until the last EP? :p

No spiral stairs.

2. Can you build apartments?

No multiple-family homes. (Well, theoretically you can, but there's nothing preventing Sims from wandering to other "apartments.")

....well, actually, I can. EA is the same company that no doubt leaves objects out of EPs intentionally so they can put them in stuff packs and charge $30 for them.

Yeah, that's what sucks about this. Losing everything we've gained over the last several years and starting back at square one just so they can pull more money out of us. Including making us pay for additional content. (the object store at EA.)

Having something as simple as weather in this game would've been nice. And CHRIST! It's beyond absurd that walls can't intersect at different heights. (Meaning no attached garage onto a house on a foundation, no split levels, etc.)

How many EPs are we going to wait for weather? For half-walls? For more useful driveways? For the ability to do split-levels?

Ugh. This is so frustrating. And it's the community's fault for lapping up the EPs like they were crack.

Oh, and you can't start a new "empty" neighborhood and built it up from scratch. There's only the base neighborhood (Sunset Valley) and there's no way to build a "new empty lot." You're stuck with all of the lots they've given you with the base game, and there's LOTS of empty space on this map nor are there many empty "cheap" lot for starter homes.

Really, what were they thinking in THAT regard?

PKTrekGirl, I haven't tried the Build Mode, but as AliciaD496 pointed out, the color and design customizations are nearly limitless. Although I do like building houses, I'm not very detail-oriented when it comes to the walls and floor designs. I guess I'm more for structure and functionality, though I have to admit, I LOVE furnishing the houses with various objects.

I remember years ago, before they even released TS2, EA Games had given a survey in terms of what gamers wanted to see in the game as well as their price expectations. I believe they based the prices of Expansions and Stuff packs on the survey results. Anyway, I thought it was ridiculous that we (gamers) always got the bare-bones package (of the original game, even the TS2 Expansions that cost $30 - $35) and had to pay extra for "Stuff" packs, which I flat out refused to buy on principle. I got all the TS2 Expansion Packs, which should already have contained a decent amount of clothes, objects, walls, and floors, but EA obvious wants to squeeze out every penny we have.

Oh, and one more thing: No cinematics for "Woo-hoo" or "First Kiss."

Ok, I've been tinkering around with building tonight...

It *IS* possible to make multiple-car, single width, driveways. I apparently wasn't doing it right during earlier attempts.

Oh, and when a Sim uses their car they don't, for example, go to their car, get in, pull out of their driveway and drive off. Instead they go to the street curb, wave (either bye or "for their car") and then the car materializes on the street with the sim in it and drives off.

Just like real life then ;)

Just ordered Sims 3. I really enjoyed 2 but I never bought any EPs for it, so I'm used to the base game and won't find the lack of EP-added stuff too annoying. However, I really wish they'd start putting more advanced stuff in the base game with each version - it's gettign silly how they reset it to the basic package every time. Are they really so creatively limited that they can only think of EPs which put in stuff that shoudl have been in the base game anyway?

Overall TS3 isn't bad, the "new game play" is Ok. I just miss some of the features even the base TS2 game had that makes me scratch my head on why such changes were made. Most notably the ability to place your own empty lots and each household you play being a "seperate town."

Trekker, I wanted to quote your post from the other thread. I, too, am feeling disappointed with the inability to create new unique neighborhoods on my own. Sure, right now the default is Sunset Valley, and if I wanted a "new" game in a "different" neighborhood, I'd still get the Sunset Valley template and just save it under a different name. :vulcan: I believe there is a new neighborhood template that's available to download for free from the on-line store. I tried downloading and installing it last night, but nothing happened, so I'll try again.

One other new feature that I really don't care for is the simultaneous aging of all the sims in the neighborhood (Sunset Valley). To me, everything just happens so damned FAST. I created a blue-skinned humanoid alien that I wanted to experiment with and have him move in and mate with one of the pre-made sims. After I played that household, I chose another household within the same town/neighborhood. Then I went back to the blue alien's house; he and his wife/partner were already senior citizens with two daughters--one child and one teen! :wtf: Then yesterday I created adult twin brothers and move them to a house. Today I played the same neighborhood for an hour. When I tried to load the twin's household, they were already senior citizens, and I hadn't even chosen the careers and skill sets.

I can see two possible solutions to this problem: (1) Turn off the aging feature (but that would defeat the purpose of life progression); (2) Make a different town/neighborhood for every sim or household I want to play. The second option would be stupid and rather useless, especially if you wanted all your sims to interact with one another. You'd have Smith Family in Sunset Valley (Prime), and then Jones Family in Sunset Valley (Beta), and then Carter Family in Sunset Valley (Gamma). Alternate freakin' realities, just like nuTrek. ;)
