The Night Of The Doctor

That was a bright spot in a fucking awfull week.

Forty million times better than the TV movie.

Does this mean BF can't give him any new companions now?
Probably. But Briggs mentioned that the upcoming Dark Eyes series will be about how the Doctor's road towards the Time War will be paved. So I'm guessing McGann may not be doing these audios forever.

That was incredible.

I saw it earlier thanks to Admiral Young, who tagged me when he linked it on his Facebook page. I watched it on my iphone, outside my wife's work, waiting for her in the car. I'd honestly given up hoping that McGann would be in this prequel. So when he appeared, I shouted out loud, a shout of surprise and joy! Fortunately, there was nobody about!

Just a fantastic little ep, with Paul really hitting the buttons in his delivery. Please let this lead to more reprisals by him!

Interesting that the Karn previously appeared in The Brain of Morbius, which of course is the ep that suggested that Hartnell wasn't the first incarnation. And I liked how we got a youthful War Doctor, which tallies with Moffatt's recent comments that he'd been around for a while by the time of DOTD.

I really can't wait for the special!

I'm curious; does this make the Big Finish stuff "canon" now?

No, because nothing is canon in Doctor Who, and yes, because it happened onscreen, and some people (i.e. me) will treat it as more real because of that.
His BF run is certainly MORE canon now than it was before.

And personally, I think as the licence allows it, and the original actor portraying a past Doctor is doing the part, any audio story that doesn't violate continuity TOO much is canonical. Its just secondary to the TV canon, obviously.

Doctor Who doesn't have a "canon" in the sense that Star Trek does, which implies set rules on what is and isn't considered binding on future stories. Stuff from the tie-ins (and from the classic series for that matter) has always been referenced or ignored in the new series as benefits whatever's happening at the moment. Different fans have their own sense of what counts, but that's nothing to do with "canon" as the term applies to fictional universes.

There are already BF companions who aren't in the list (Mary Shelley, Samson and Gemma), so it's not meant to be exhaustive. Some are suggesting they were chosen for plot-specific reasons that involve massive spoilers for the BF stories; it might also just be the ones Moffat remembered off the top of his head. BF certainly isn't going to let it control what they do; they introduced Erimem despite their being no sign of her in the fifth Doctor's regenerative flashbacks.

The specific name-dropping does suggest an affiliation of the program with BF, though, in a rather direct way. And I doubt they'd mention Samson after the book/audio mess that was.

Apart from Molly, the ones listed all died, or apparently died. The Doctor fell into a funk after the last two, and Molly brought him out of it.

There's been specific name-dropping for different tie-ins before, though. My point was that this is nothing new, and nothing to do with canon or anything else official. If some people feel BF "counts" more now that it did, well, bully for them.

Yes, Mr Soak, I know, and was trying to avoid spelling it out so that people who might be tempted based on the name drops to check out the BF audios wouldn't have big plot details spoiled for them right from the get-go.

Sorry. I'll go back and spoiler it, I guess.

I'm so glad I wasn't spoiled for that. I haven't heard any of the Big Finish audios, so my only experience with McGann is the 1996 TV movie. After this, though, I want more of his Doctor. He was great!

As soon as Moffat said that we'd all miscounted something and needed to check our DVDs, I wondered (like many others, I'm sure) if he was referring to the possible earlier Doctors in The Brain of Morbius. Based on what they've been setting up, they could easily be earlier incarnations that didn't refer to themselves as The Doctor.

Don't forget that, if the BF audios are being acknowledged, then that includes the Sisterhood's appearance in Sisters of the Flame/The Vengeance of Morbius, which is an Eighth Doctor two-part audio story featuring Lucie Miller (not to mention Alexander Siddig aka Julian Bashir).

Obviously the Doctor would remember the Sisters from when he was Four, but if they're including the audios, then he's also encountered them again a lot more recently than that.

.

I'm going to admit that I was wrong.

I've said all along that no, they wouldn't do a McGann regeneration scene because it would be nothing more than ticking off a box.

Moffat proved me wrong, the scurvy bastard.

Wow, that was great.
