The name Trip

commodore64

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Do you think Bristol Palin (daughter of Sarah Palin, gov. of Alaska and ex-vice president runner) named her child Tripp after Charles Tucker III?

I'd never heard the name Trip until Enterprise. I thought it was okay, but I'm not sure I'd name my child that. Your thoughts?

Well, to be fair, it *was* only a nickname. Trip, as in Triple (i.e. the third Charles Tucker). FWIW, his original nick was supposed to be Spike...

I doubt that was the inspiration for the name, which actually is a fairly common nickname for someone who is "John Smith III".

I don't think the Palin family are enlightened enough to watch or get a name from a science-based show. God must have spoken to her when she was keeping an eye on the Russians and told her to name her son a stupid name.

Just a nickname...but makes sense for anyone who is "the third," and sure beats the heck out of "Spike."

Considering that Bristol's brothers are named Track and Trig and her sisters are Willow and Piper, Tripp doesn't sound that odd in that family.

I have heard both Trip and Trey used for those who are the 'III' - hard to come up with distintive nicknames by that time. A local family is on the 4th - he gets called Tommy4.

I don't think that's a fair assumption to make about Bristol. It seems obvious that she (and her boyfriend) were doing things her parents wouldn't have approved of - who says it stops with that? Gods help us if we all have to be judged by our parents.

Indeed. I heard that other names in consideration were Twix and Spatula. :D

I watched the show American Dreams on NBC (I loved that show), and when the oldest son - who was a Jr. - and his girlfriend had their baby he was a III and they called him Trip from the day he was born.

I actually know somebody from high school that did the same thing.

i can't believe people are so unoriginal as to name their kids after themselves and even then the kids naming THEIR kid the same...

On the other hand, have you never considered honoring someone you love by naming you child after that person? Someone that gave you life, cared for you and fed you, sent you to college, ...

I think Trip is a cute nickname, not sure about it as an actual name though!

My granddad, dad and oldest brother all have the same name, and my nephew is named after his dad (my brother). I think it's a nice tradition.

It depends on where you are. It's not real common where I live, but it is down south, where they also call people "Bubba" instead of "Junior" I might add. ;)

Where I hail from, naming a boy after his father is done because of tradition and to honor family, not because of a lack of imagination. Daughters are even named after their mothers.

There are the problems with mail and such, though...

I'm betting that might be a reason for the heavy use of nicknames down there, sicne presumably at least locally the postmaster would know who something was supposed to go to if addressed to "Bubba" or "Trip". That's my theory anyway. :D
