Game The Most Disliked Regular Star Trek Character, 2025 Edition

Sakonna

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
THE OBJECTIVE: A sudden-death elimination game in which we remove our personal favorite characters from a list of all Trek regulars, until we arrive at the character that is, if not the worst, at least the most disliked.

It's a framework to say positive things about characters from across the franchise.

THE RULES
: Below is a list of all regular characters from every Star Trek series. Characters that have been regulars or recurring on multiple series are listed once and judged collectively (though Hologram Janeway is a distinct character from Real Kathryn Janeway).

Eliminate/save your favorite, or the one you deem the ‘best' of what currently remains.
Post something you enjoy about the character you are saving, and copy-and-paste the list with your choice removed.

You can use any standard you like to judge which option is "best." You can save characters for reasons that are widely shared, or for idiosyncratic qualities that no one appreciates but you.

As you get down the list, you might have to reach more and more for something to enjoy about a character, and it's OK to eventually save a character for being "less bad."

But -- no tactical voting! You cannot remove a character because you don’t think anyone else will, or because you feel it would threaten your preferred character's chance to “win.”

You can take multiple turns.

Leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another character.

New players are always welcome. You do not have to already be a "most disliked game" regular to dive in.

Enjoy!

Sorting out the weird billing of the modern era, especially on Picard, made updating this list trickier than I expected!

I'll start by saving Kira Nerys. Absolutely one of Trek's most admirable, dynamic, and multi-faceted characters. And what an arc she has!

Also, the first woman on Trek to be a fully fleshed out person both on the page and in the performance (the women that came before had to make it all happen with performance, without that much help from the writers).

Oh, gods, this is a big one! So many awesome characters to choose from. I don't know that I have an absolute favourite - I think that depends on my mood at the time, but I am always particularly fond of one Samanthan Rutherford from LDS. It's his enthusiasm and positive attitude - much like Tendi (another favourite) - that get me.
Well, those and his arms...

Quark for me!

Such a delightful character to watch trying to put into effect his little selfish schemes, fueled by the philosophy of his species, and still have something of a heart underneath. Even though I don't know how I'd deal with him in real life.

Saving Jadzia. The improvement in her character from the first season or two of the series is incredible and Terry Farrell really shone in the role once they got a lock on the character's personality. I think her relationship with Worf is one of the best romances in the franchise and her death was such a disappointment.

Wow, what a list!

I'll just go from top to bottom and see if it's a good one.

McCoy was the heart and soul of TOS, and his camaraderie with Spock was funny, and thoughtful.

I too was marveling at how long this list is. I think it was 97 items to start with. For a second I was listing every show the character had appeared on after their name, but with so many crossover appearances now it looked messy and insane, so I abandoned that part of the list assembly.

Since my fandom started with TNG, I guess that makes Deanna Troi my first favorite Trek character. It's interesting to look back now, when I've finally gotten a late diagnosis on a bunch of sensory issues, and realize her repeated mind violation was what I was relating to most deeply. I too had some extra senses that the people around me did not have, which, correctly channeled, can be special abilities, but also left me vulnerable to being overwhelmed and shut down in a way that was totally out of my control.

Also, from a less personal angle, the casting really saved them here. If they didn't have someone as fiery and dynamic as Marina Sirtis in the role, those scripts really would have been unplayable.

I will save Data. Spiner was fantastic throughout the run. During TNG's prime, Stewart, Spiner, and Goldberg could all be counted on to carry a scene.

And FWIW, shouldn't Lore be on the list?

Well, I've already mentioned her, so my second save is D'Vana Tendi - whether she's a perky, optimistic science officer, or Mistress of the Winter Constellations, or even a giant scorpion, she'll always be a favourite

Starting with the characters I like the most, followed by least liked, then the characters I dislike less, followed lastly by my most disliked (assuming nobody else gets there first):

Q

His purpose in TNG, as Picard's foil and opposite, is never less than top-notch.

He is truly unpredictable.

He may have been in a handful of episodes, but it always feels like he's been in the show far longer, as an iconic staple. Not unlike Uncle Arthur of "Bewitched".

He is a trickster, showing both bad things but not for bad reasons - ditto for good things, for which "Q-Pid" is a more interesting example, even if fan-favorite it is not.

There was always a message, either subtle or gross, for Picard to figure out - which also helped give TNG's finale to find focus for the ultimate trick.

And, best of all, you knew Q loved Linux.

Well, if nothing else, here are some articles that demonstrate Q's importance:

What's left to say, you don't ask? Well, he was the latest of crossover fodder for DS9, for which he didn't need to be there since audiences already knew Sisko isn't Picard, but a second outing - since they bothered with a first - may have been interesting. As for VOY, he just wants to get it on with Janeway and due to a weird set of contrivances while diluting the Q Continuum down to some doldrums akin to our level, which always seemed hokey. If nothing else, compare his first visit in Trekland with... the last...

Q actually has a point in being in the script, discussing what Star Trek is. And that clip isn't anywhere near his best in that episode, "Q Who". (One of the best is when Picard and Riker whine and Q responds cooly with "Oh, please." TNG season 2 did remind that outer space is big and nasty and often did it so well...)

Let's also take a look at a more recent entry as this is 100% spot-on pure Q:

Great stuff.

And now, it's VOY's turn, at the end of the 90s era:

Janeway's already figured him out, which is a mild plus, but Q's point in VOY is just for hollow corny comedy, wanting to copulate with her, and make oh-so-cute callbacks to Riker's fam because making the universe a smaller place is always compelling in a show where the goal is to seek out ne-- but anyway, here is the clip:

And despite that cornfield, DeLancie still elevates it more than the nostalgiabait it is. But it's still a far cry from the worst Q story in TNG.

Time for some love for Katherine Pulaski!

Seconded. Controversial, but I still say Pulaski is the stronger doctor.

Crusher was in the show longer and it is 100% down to McFadden's performance and presence, rather than what's in so many scripts, that makes her so wonderful and iconic. (Indeed, she is underrated.) And yet, what's in the scripts can be so often bland, character-diluting, or even character-ruining (especially after her return to the show) that, when it came time to make a new Doctor after season 1, they gave Pulaski an actual direction and scope from the get-go in ways that Crusher never had. Even an arc of her warming up and accepting of Data. Stern, no-nonsense, doesn't ignore older methods of healing because there may be times when it's needed, she's fantastic. What's truly sad is, by the time we got the EMH, who is far more a McCoy clone that Pulaski ever was accused of being thanks in part to parroting the "I'm a Doctor not a ____" meme, fans no longer cared. Any inference beyond that however is subjective.
