Didn't a few of the Horta "eggs" end up being used in the engineering set, as the bronze balls on the set piece used to depict the dilithium chamber? The unbroken Horta eggs (and engineering set balls) were simply painted bouncing balls. As for where they are now, probably in a landfill.

I'm not sure about the Horta, but part of the fuzzy furr from the Mugato looks like it landed on top of Donald Trump's head. 
I don't think the Horta were ever mentioned again in canon, but they've made a few appearances in novels. Memory Beta has more: http://memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/Horta
The Horta reminds me of a shaggy pepperoni pizza. Wish one could tunnel its way into my room right now! 
If you look carefully at the 'egg' you can see the seam where the 2 halves of the plastic ball were glued together.
The big brass balls that stood as horta eggs were recycled as set props throughout Trek's run until they were finally returned to their rightful place in Captain Robau's scrotum.
The Horta was later sliced to pieces and eaten by James Doohan in exchange for his voice acting in TAS.
