The Global Football Thread

:p

Although you're not wrong, unfortunately. Still, time will tell.
My Nottingham Forest won away 3-2 at Old Trafford for the first time since Brian Clough was manager if memory serves. We now sit 5th in the table after 15 games and European football for the first time since 1996 seems a distinct possibility. Not bad for a club that finished 17th & 16th after being away from the PL for 23 years.
I'm old enough to remember when Forest was a top-notch club. Can't say I'm sorry to see them going well, even at the expense of my joke of a team. Just goes to show that the wheel always turns eventually.

More importantly, FIFA really is the most despicable sporting organisation on the planet. Rigging the 2030 World Cup to ensure Saudi Arabia got the 2034 edition is a new low, even for them. Gotta keep the money flowing in, though. Never mind the human rights abuses and similar trivialities.

It's not new is it, after 18 and 22 it's no wonder. Corruption and lined pockets determine were the world cup gets held these days.

No, it certainly isn't new. But somehow it becomes more contemptible with every iteration. The usual crap about football being some sort of magical catalyst for meaningful change - or something equally grandiose and utterly absurd (because of course everything is different in Russia and Qatar now, isn't it?) - makes it even more insulting.

I was thinking about how much money is being thrown around in Saudi

How much is Ronaldo earning etc.

How much would you bet against a rule change to allow a certain number of players, provided they have played there for say 3 years or more IRRESPECTIVE of if they have caps for their home country, to play for the hosts.

Could easily see it, a 35 yo Mbappe type player turning out for them alongside other players playing out their years for big money.

It's 10 years away, I wouldn't bet against something like that.

This is like a really, really small thing, but it's been festering in my head ever since the Liverpool / Girona match and so I can't help it.

During that match - which was at Girona - half the stadium was empty! Anybody know why?

(The stands all had upper decks but nobody was in them.)

That Liverpool / Everton match that had to be postponed because of the storm....anybody here know when it will be played?

Watching Liverpool / West Ham right now.

One of the commentators said that the top two clubs are Liverpool and Nott'm Forest...."makes you wonder whether we're in 1979."

The other one said "By the look of your overcoat, we are."

I DIED :guffaw:

Well in the name of banter and being from Derby we might argue it's still 1979 in Nottingham as we used to always say Forest fans lived in the past

To be fair though Forests current position vs ours isn't one for us to boast about even if we are having an ok season back in the Championship.

They are certainly the surprise package so far this season

In case any of y'all are watching the Liverpool / Spurs match: Rodrigo Bentancur is conscious and currently in the hospital undergoing tests.

Yeah, I saw a replay of him going down. Tried to pull off a diving header/flick off the corner kick, whiffed and then landed really hard, head first into the pitch. The way he whipped his neck around and then slammed into the ground was pretty scary. He did eventually post a photo on social media saying all was good, thankfully.

It was nice to see my Spurs finally get one over on Liverpool; usually it goes the other way. Liverpool had their moments but I thought Spurs were clearly the better team for most of the match. It'll be interesting to see how the second leg goes next month, since by then Spurs should have their starting CBs and GK back healthy. That being said, the young GK who they literally just signed over the weekend, Antonin Kinsky, performed excellently. No pressure making your debut against one of the best teams in the world in a cup semifinal...

After having been relegated to the j2 League in 2024, the main focus on the field for Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo in 2025 is how to once again gain promotion back to the J1 League,

That said, the clube recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Hokkaido Ainu Association, with the goal (ahem) of furthering awareness of Hokkaido's Indigenous Ainu culture - not least via the new uniform designs being used by the team this year:

It's most welcome to see Consa - and their counterparts over in Nippon Professional Baseball, the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters - make efforts to highlight Ainu culture going forward!

Lot of unfamiliar names on the Liverpool lineup today. I wonder why Slot's doing that.

And speaking of Arne Slot, I swear I don't hear any two broadcasters pronounce his name the same way. This guy's pronouncing it "Schlot".
