The Global Football Thread

No drama mate - the issue is mainly how the media portray it as a “both sides” thing and try to claim it as a minority but when you are there and experience it first hand it is clear that is isn’t.

More needs to be done to call it out for what it is - similar to how (rightly) the Chelsea a
Rent Boys chant was slammed for its homophobic nature, which after being called out properly very quickly disappeared from grounds.

New question:

Do Premier League teams ever retire numbers?

Reason I ask is, I was watching a Liverpool match and I noticed Dominik Szoboszlai is wearing number 8. I also know that was Steven Gerrard’s number. Given how important Gerrard was to the club, surely they’d retire that number when he moved on?

Infrequently - usually only when a player of great importance suffers a tragedy or something like that.

In football the legacy of the number and handing it on the successor (in a way) is the bigger deal, in part because traditionally football was limited to 1-11 and then 12-22 so fewer numbers available and rules used to state that teams must have those numbers for their starting line ups (12-22 was the away team)

The numbers are also synonymous with positions and so it isn't just legacy within a club but across football (number 7 being a tricky winger - Cantona, Dalglish, Ronaldo, Keegan etc

I'm not into football at all but you can't escape it in Germany so here goes my little bit of schadenfreude.

Bayern Munich ( Bayern München) is the premier football club in Germany and has dominated the league for decades now. It is a rare occurence when they don't win league championship and they were regularly at least in the semi-finals in the european champions league, sometimes even winning it.

This string of success has, in my opinion, bred a level of arrogance, ego and entitlement that is beyond belief. The former leadership of the club, especially when Uli Hoeneß led the club ( and was caught, sentended and jailed for tax evasion a couple of years back), was beyond belief and led to many really disliking the club intensely, including me.

Now since the old leadership retired cracks have started to form or become a problem and the current leadership was not able to right the ship - they will not become league champion this year and probably not go very far in the international competitions. Just yesterday they lost against a newly promoted team which by all accounts they should have steamrolled.

It may not be nice to think so but i love it when a team that arrogant is taken down a peg or two. It's also evident that the majority of the fans are only there when they are successful - i've seen numerous videos of people leaving the stadium already while the match was still going on just with Bayern on the losing side. There are other teams with a very strong fan culture, who stick with the team in good and bad times but not so with Bayern it seems.

Bayern München's stadium is sweet. I hope to one day see a match there. (I have visited the stadium, but it wasn’t on a matchday.)

Pity that 1860 München doesn't play there anymore 'cos I want to see it light up in red AND blue!

Discovered there's a handy list

I'd forgotten Birmingham retired the 22 shirt after Jude Bellingham left, an example of where it isn't linked to tragedy.

It was really weird watching the Nashville fan fest before yesterday's match. There were tons of Liverpool and Man United fans just laughing and cheering and playing. TOGETHER. Arm in arm.

I'm just gonna hazard a guess this never happens over there. I mean, even the players pretty much hate each other's guts, don't they? Let alone the fans.

Its can be very tribal over here. Banter is OK but I've never understood the hate some fans feel towards each other. I think generally players don't dislike each other. It's a physical game and sometimes emotions boil over but generally players get on.

Another thing I thought was interesting is that the crowds were so huge at that Nashville fan fest. I honestly had no idea Premier League was that popular over here. I see people in my own store who are fans.

There's even a LFC supporters club right here in Omaha! Linky

Agree it is less so now but a huge issues the England national team used to have (up to about 2012) was that players did hate each other

Die Toten Hosen sum up what I think of Bayern (go BVB!):

There's not much in the world
You could abide by
Some says it's love
Maybe that's true
And there's always God
If there's nobody else
Others believe in nothing
Life has made them hard

So much can happen
So much can happen
There's just one thing I know for sure:
Never in my life I would go to Bayern Munich

I mean, if I was 20
And super-talented
And Real Madrid had already asked me
And the boys from Manchester
And I had also played for Germany already
And were mentally fit
And Uli Hoeneß would come
To ask me

I would not open the door
Because for me it's out of question
To spoil my character
Among people like the Bavarians

I just wanted to clarify this
So that we are on the same level
I have nothing against Munich
I just would never go to Bavaria

Is something like his really necessary?
Isn't life much too beautiful?
To throw oneself away
And go to the FC Bayern

So much can happen
So much can happen
No matter how hard my fate was
I would never go to the FC Bayern Munich

What kind of parents do you need to have
To be so spoiled
To sign a contract
With this sh*t team?

We would never go to the FC Bayern Munich!
Never go the Bavarians!
We would never go to the FC Bayern Munich!
Never go the Bavarians!

I'm watching Liverpool / Fulham right now.

Liverpool's the visiting team, so why are they wearing their home jerseys?

(they did that at Atalanta as well last week)

Mostly teams only wear away kits if they clash with the team they are playing. Sometimes they will wear their away strip even if their isn't a clash, probably down to contractual reasons with the kit supplier or to sell more away kits.

OK, I got it. Liverpool's not wearing their away gear 'cos it would look too much like Fulham's gear. Gotcha.

Edit: I love how Trent Alexander-Arnold celebrates a goal. He just shrugs, like "Yeah, I'm awesome."

After watching TIFO footballs video on the original Ronaldo, it made me think about who would be in my "All Time XI" for the time period I have watched football for...

1996-2024
Buffon

Lahm
Nesta
Stam
Maldini

Modric
Keane
Ronaldinho

Messi
Ronaldo
C. Ronaldo
