The Doctor's voice

Agreed. The accent gets very pronounced when he's speaking angrily/rapidly. I like him in the role, but his lines are just a bit hard to understand sometimes.
Well as a non US Star Trek fan I'm delighted there are some accents to break up what sounds like the ships full of middle class west coast Americans we have been getting under Kurtzmann.
Ya Disco was more sexually and racially diverse but God did the bridge sound like an L.A. Starbucks. Whether black, white or asian they all looked like they were from California.

I think Babs' accent is fairly easy to parse, though it take practices to recognize unfamiliar accents, and there are very few African and West African accents in US media. Notably, Uhura is from Kenya but "sounds" American --- I'm very willing to imagine that in the 23rd century, like today, accents are very malleable.

Mostly, I think his voice is just low and raspy --- like a very gentle Cookie Monster. So that can make it a little harder to understand clearly until you're used to it.

I also kinda wished they'd just let Jess Bush use her Aussie accent, but since TOS Chapel doesn't have it, I guess it makes sense. But I can find the Aussie accent hiding in there --- listen for words like "anything," which Americans often pronounce like "iny-thing" and Commonwealth accents often pronounce like "aaa-nything."

He's definitely a bit hard to understand at times. Less about the accent and more that it just comes out *softly* so I feel like I have to work a lot harder to process it. Know a few people like that IRL too, just not enough force put behind the voice so it's almost like it wants to be background noise and not get pulled out.

I worked in London a lot longer than a cadet is in California and I still sound Irish.

It varies from person to person: some retain their accent for life while others lose their "natural sound" almost lickety-split. Arnold Schwarzenegger supposed hired an acting/voice acting coach to help him preserve his trademark Austrian accent.

And as I said they even all have that Hollywood/L.A. look to them

How do you mean? California is one of the most diverse/cosmopolitan states in the union; you can find virtually anyone from every ethnic background there.

Except for Owo?
Most of the Bridge crew hail from Canada. Maybe a Toronto Starbucks?
How exactly do Californians look? (Full disclosure, I'm posting from California)

Also, neither Star Trek: Discovery nor Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is shot in California. Star Trek: Picard is shot in California, but Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Discovery are primarily shot in Ontario.

On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway;
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself,
'This could be Heaven or this could be Hell'
Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor,
I thought I heard them say...
Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year (Any time of year)
You can find it here
Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes Benz
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat.
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget
So I called up the Captain,
'Please bring me my wine'
He said, 'We haven't had that spirit here since nineteen sixty nine'
And still those voices are calling from far away,
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say...
Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face
They livin' it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise (what a nice surprise)
Bring your alibis
Mirrors on the ceiling,
The pink champagne on ice
And she said 'We are all just prisoners here, of our own device'
And in the master's chambers,
They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives,
But they just can't kill the beast
Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before
'Relax, ' said the night man,
'We are programmed to receive.
You can check-out any time you like,
But you can never leave!'

I don't think it's his accent that makes it hard for me to understand him, it's the hoarse timbre of his voice. I missed a lot of dialogue watching on my TV yesterday. Today, rewatching on my phone with earbuds, it was a lot clearer.

Yeah. I understood him fine, but he does sound hoarse.

Geez. Come for the CN Tower, stay for the pretty ladies...

Bush is also faking her accent- she's an Aussie, so that might have something to do with it. Or just the sound mix.
Why can't they just let her use her natural Aussie accent?

I like Bab's accent, I hope it's his natural accent. I wouldn't want him to be delivering lines using a accent that isn't his natural one.

Geez. Come for the CN Tower, stay for the pretty ladies...
Is there a difference between the Ontario & Vancouver accents?
