The Ashes 2009

A rare foray into this forum for me... but I can't not post in here today. :D
And the glory hunters come out of the woodwork at last... :p

Well, it's finally over. Hussey finally succumbing. An incredible game, Australia finish 348 all out, England win by 197 runs.

And of course, with a series win of 2-1, England regain the Ashes!

Of course. I'm just in it for the drinking afterwards anyway.

It's been a largely a shitty series in terms of the cricket played (not helped by the weather) and the lack of free televised content has meant I haven't really cared much (still don't terribly, to be honest, though TMS has been on in the background most of the day).

But an Ashes win is an Ashes win nonetheless! :D

And that, they said, is that.

Oh, well. Well played England. Deserved win. They worked hard, and got what they worked for. Australia played well, just not well enough.

Now, all that's left is the British media to become all smug, and milk it for everything it's worth...again.

Yeah, I've only survived with good old TMS. And to be honest, another part of the problem is the absence of the legends from the Australia side, most of whom have retired or, in the case of Brett Lee, injured. Both sides have been very evenly matched all series, though, in terms of skill, blunders, dodgy umpiring decisions (of which there have been a LOT), and sheer luck.

It will be interesting to see how both sides develop over the next 5 years or so.

But yeah - it's another series win at home over the Aussies. :D Roll on 2010-11!

Never mind the British media, it's the English contingent of the TrekBBS you have to worry about. ;)

Andrew Strauss is named England's man of the series, and he receives the Compton-Miller medal. :D

He has been the most consistent player in the England side, and probably the one who has stood out the most in a series where each Test has had its share of heroes on both sides. A fair decision, overall.

Congrats to England.

Now for the blame game to truly begin here in Australia. I personally blame Warne for saying we would win 5-0.

Good to see Hussey stand up at the end. I hope he has a good one day series to help keep him in the team. But also angry that he ran out Ponting...as that ended any hope.

Oh yes. Hurrah!

Fair play to Ponting though - he made some mistakes and owned up to them. Stepped up to bat, as a captain should. Good man, and a good team. It's a shame they lost.

Sweetie, explain to me what the Compton-Miller medal is for? :klingon:

It's a medal introduced in the 2005 Ashes series that is awarded to the single outstanding player of the series. Named after Australia's Keith Miller and England's Dennis Compton - two Ashes adversaries who were close friends off the field.

Andrew Flintoff was the first recipient in 2005, Ricky Ponting winning it in 2006-7.

The medal and title is separate from the Players of the Series honours for each side (which are decided by the opposing team's coaching staff and this year were awarded to Andrew Strauss and Michael Clarke, the two leading run scorers of the series).

Congrats to England. Both sides had bad sessions / days but they won the ones that mattered and their world-class player (Flintoff) stood up when it mattered. Ours (Ponting) didn't. It's a deserved win.

That second morning at Cardiff did indeed end up being crucial.

The knives will be well and truly out over here now. Ponting will probably be crucified by journos and armchair geniuses for whom international cricket is oh so simple. He is tactically naive, he does lose the moment instead of seizing it all too often and he needs to cut down on the tanties, but I'm not convinced anyone else would have done any better. If your bowlers can't / won't bowl at the damned stumps and your batsmen play dumb shots there's not a great deal any captain can do about it.

The selectors will go into denial, and they'll retain their jobs. It's what they do and how CA operates these days. Pathetic.

Oh, well. Life will go on. :bolian:

Congratulations to Andrew Strauss and England. Dare I say he is actually a likeable England captain :p

He seems like a ripping bloke, a batsman who knows his game inside out, and to pick that squad up after the Headingley massacre was no small feat - a deserved man of the series.

Strauss 9/10
Cook 3/10 - can't see why he is the anointed one. Looks to have a huge weakness outside off stump and no real attacking power.
Bopara - 2/10 - clearly not a test number three.
Pietersen - 4/10 - luckily for us he got injured. England's best and most frustrating batsman.
Collingwood - 5/10 - Cardiff innings probably won England the Ashes, but there must be a few question marks going forward.
Trott - 10/10 - could you ask a debutant to do any more in a match as important than that? Looks composed and classy, and should take over at 4.
Bell - 5/10 still an enigma - something is missing - self belief? Should have scored a ton at the Oval Should hold down 5, but certainly not a number 3.
Prior - 7/10 looks a quality keeper and really good bat to me, potential to be a real star.
Flintoff - 5/10 - let's face it - he didn't have a very good series due to injury, but that spell at Lord's wound back the clock.
Broad - 7/10 - Take out the Oval, and he'd get a 2/10. Should probably have been dropped mid series, but winning the Ashes with that spell at the Oval turns him into an immortal.
Harmison - 5/10 - last hurrah for the white West Indian?
Onions - 6/10 - looks a very good bowler when conditions suit.
Anderson - 6/10 - when it doesn't swing, his head drops and his bowling gets murdered. But when it's moving around - lethal.
Swann - 5/10 - not convinced about him. Give Rashid a go.
Panesar - 1/10 - should give him 10/10 seeing his innings won you the Ashes! Bowling has no impact - looks like the end of the road for one of my favourite players.

Hughes - 3/10 - unlucky to be dropped, but he'll be back.
Katich - 6/10 - not a great series by his standards -would not look out of place leading the side.
Watson 7/10 - a superb job given the circumstances - number 6 is his going forward, but not an opener long term.
Ponting - 6/10 - only one hundred for the series is a poor return for a player of his class and he will be hurting because he knows it too. Match awareness isn't improving, but set to continue as captain.
Clarke - 8/10 - answered lingering questions about his ability to score runs when it really matters. Maybe if they're serious about him leading he should take over while in the form of his life?
North - 9/10 - the production line cranks out another star.
Hussey - 4/10 - may be the sacrificial lamb despite his heroic last test hundred.
Haddin - 5/10 - Some very sloppy keeping, and some very classy batting.
Manou - 4/10 - another trivia question has been born.
Hauritz - 5/10 - impressed me with his guts and tidy bowling, but not able to bowl teams out, and not the answer going forward.
Clark - 6/10 - spell at Headingley destroyed England - thought he'd won us the Ashes. Selectors have made it all too clear they're going to call time on his career after this.
Siddle - 7/10 - Pace, accuracy, heart - still raw, but a huge future.
Johnson - 3/10 - What went wrong? - the disappointment of the series
Hilfenhaus - 8/10 - too many no-balls, but the Aussie bowler of the series.

Well, the first one dayer is on tonight. Not sure if I can be bothered to watch the whole thing as I'm off to see the Wallabies tomorrow...tonight. Given their run so far I hope that I haven't wasted my money on my tickets.

Anyway, looks like England will be chasing around 255.

Edit: end of innings, 5/260 so England will be chasing 261.

Came very close to me wishing I went to bed.

Aust won by 4 runs in the end, England had 2 wickets left. Good to see Lee back but when his last over (2nd last) his first two went for 4 I was almost crying. I also remember him having a 10 ball over for his 2nd or 3rd over. His run rate was a got 2 to 3 higher than everyone else...he does make you nervous.

I caught the match too while driving home this evening. Pretty exciting stuff, with Wright and Rashid keeping us well entertained as any self-respecting batting tail inevitably does when things come to a head. ;)

TMS was not the same though was it. To think, all that fancy technical kit paid for out of my good licence fee in the hands of a man who can put petrol...

The England batsmen need to smell the coffee. They cannot rely on the lower order and so-called 'all-rounders' to get the lion's share of the runs. Batsmen are there to bat. Pretty while some of them are, they're not just there for that. I'll let Strauss off - anyone can have one bad match. But the rest of them? Used up overs getting in only to then get out. We need someone who can crack on before Broad and Swann come to the wicket.

Another win by Australia defending a score that waqs considered below par. Great bowling in the end by Lee, Watson, Bracken Hauritz and Johnson.

England seem to have lost any semblance of batting ability. We have men in the counties making hundreds (Cook in his last two matches, I believe) and whacking 5 sixes in an over. While the national team sticks with the woeful Bopara, and the almost equally awful Shah. Even Prior must feel someone like Foster breathing down his neck.
Our bowlers are successfully pegging back the Aussie batting to very manageable targets. Then the bats come in and play like the second eleven at my local primary school.
Poor Strauss: the only remaining decent bat, and trying to captain such a mess. And then he has to go out and face the press every time!

Haven't been watching any of the ODI. But watching the news tonight, and Ricky Ponting has announced his retirement from international Twenty20 cricket. Source

Means more time for test and ODI for Ponting.
