The 11th Doctor's costume...

Since we have the thread for who should play the 11th Doctor I figured we could use one for his attire.

I was sitting out on the balcony watching the rain storm and wondering that very question: What will the next Doctor wear?

To me, it was really only Doctors four through seven that had the "off the wall" wardrobes. The 9th, wearing a leather jacket, while unique for the leather, was not outlandish and the 10th, with a suit, trench coat and sneakers is not that far out either.

So what should the 11th wear? Something outlandish like the middle doctors? Or something more dressy? Or should they finally just stick the Doctor in jeans and a t-shirt?

I am of the opinion that the Doctor's costume should always be quite distinct and anachronistic, with touches of eccentricity. T-Shirt and jeans may be companion material, but is definitley not Time Lord fashion. Of all the Doctors, the only one who looks "normal" is 9, and that's sorta part of who he is. Heck, pretty much every costume reflects the personality of its wearer, so the costume for the next Doc will totally depend on who he is.

Speaking of which, I was the 11th Doctor at ComicCon:

I think that the Doctor's costume should always be slightly eccentric. It shouldn't be over-the-top eccentric like the 8th's or the 4th's, or just plain butt-ugly like the 6th's. Something in the vein of the 5th's, 7th's, 9th's, or 10th's. Only without the question marks.

What the U-Boat Captain look?

I think it will depend who the next Doctor is. Tennant's built perfectly suited the spiv/geek/Jarvis Cocker look that we got, as did Eccelston with the leather jacket.

I think the trick is to come up with something that's anachronistic yet fits in as well. I quite like the idea of an old style WW2 british army cropped jacket, obviously bereft of any rank/unit insignia (no pun intended) I like the idea of the very pacifist Doctor wearing part of an army uniform.

Here's James Macavoy in Atonement to demonstrate what I mean

I think the 4th doctor's outfit was quite nice at times, it was quite simple to begin with and at least looked like real clothes as opposed to the 5th's hand made 'uniform'. I do like Davison's outfit, but it doesn't have the same thrown together look that I think a Doctor's outfit should have.

You're right though, never again a Colin Baker style outfit! NEVER!!!

Poor Colin didn't even want that outfit.

And I agree, the 4th, aside from the scarves, wasn't that outlandish. I'd like to see them stick to something fairly normal, perhaps from a previous era (Victorian, Edwardian) with a touch of eccentricity.

i'd love to see hm regenerate somewhere with UNIT and have to wear one of their uniforms, but sans beret and then turn up at the next adventure and have the locals freak because UNIT's villains to them...

^ cant see the Doctor sticking with a UNIT unifrom really, he has the whole TARDIS wardrobe to chose from, plus any clothing he might steal, im looking at you Paul McGann

Captain Jack Harkness pretty much already did that look . . .

well, he could wear it for 2 stories and then swap...
if there is a reason he cant get to the TARDIS wardrobe than yeah they could pull it off.

makes me wonder should Tennants final episode end with a starnge man opening his eye on the ground, jump back 24 hours, and then we find out that the strange man is the Doctor regerenated, and having had to change clothes during those 24 hours.

I think it would be interesting if the next doctor wore a vest . . . not necessarily like Marty McFly's 'life preserver' vest, but you never know :D

The Doctor's costume should reflect his personality. Personally, I'm hoping the next Doctor is less affable than the last two, particularly the tenth. I'm hoping for a move toward a more early Pertweesque or even Hartnell-like Doctor who is standoffish, proud, and a bit more acid tongued and sharp witted. I'd like him to say, as Pertwee once did, and unashamedly so, "You, sir, a nitwit." So, I think his costume, if he fits that mold, should reflect that.

I say give him a bow tie, press his clothes well, maybe even make him quite uptight about how well he is dressed.

His shoes should always shine. He should wear an overcoat / topcoat at least on occasion, but he should have a variety of them, rather like Pertwee and Tom Baker. It may also be a good time for bringing back the bow tie, not the cravat of the Pertwee years, but perhaps a collection of bow ties in several different colors and styles. Stick with the suit - move away from the pinstripe, but give him a distinctive style, perhaps somewhat 1950's or very early 60's, and, if so, he should wear a hat. Hats were, after all, in style back then. In short, take Mad Men on AMC as a cue and then work from there.

Eddie Izzard in a corset and high heels!

*waits for people to recover*

:D

Okay, not really. Even if Eddie Izzard actually becomes The Doctor, I rather have him in "regular" clothing. Although a boa wouldn't be too bad...

IF the Doctor is to be smartly dressed next time around, I would further suggest that the new guy clean up his damn TARDIS once in a while. :P

I had a rather cool idea for an 11th Doctor costume. What if he wore the coat of a 19th century London police officer? Then he and the TARDIS would match in some weird anachronistic mismatched way. And for some reason, I'm imagining Bill Nighy wearing said getup.

Here! Here! I say regenerate the Doctor and mysteriously change the desktop. The 10th leaves it one way, and when the 11th and his companion enter it again, it''s completely changed. Explain it with just a couple lines:

"Doctor, it's changed!"
"What's changed?"
"The TARDIS, can't you see?"
"Yes, and why not?"
"What?"
"New me, new desktop, of course."

And leave it at that.

I enisioned something similar, in that the next Doctor would be somethign of a neat freak. He'd regenerate, waltz back into the TARDIS, and immediately walk out again once he noticed how disorganized and messy he'd been in the past couple incarnations. Cut back later, and the new Doctor would be in a cleaning apron, rubber gloves and surgical mask, scrubbing away the set and pulling off the bicycle pumps and pram wheels. :)

The current control room certainly has a lot of character and charm (quite neatly avoiding looking campy sci-fi by incorporating a bunch of contemporary junk as controls), but hey - IMO the TARDIS is an ALIEN machine. While it should be lived-in, the TARDIS should be really distinctly ALIEN. We know by the way the TARDIS is almost instantly repaired no matter what it's dropped in or what spaceships crash into it, that the "look" of the room is purely superficial and doesn't HAVE to look that way. If the Doctor WANTED a camp room with 1980s CGA graphics and colourful switches, it's his own damn choice.
