That South African He/She runner

Do we know if this is true?
I don't really trust the sun.

Some of the reports say the findings aren't supposed to be out until at least two weeks from now (USA Today) or even until November.

Other ones say the IAAF already has the results and is trying to get in touch with her to talk about them before making them public but the ASA (Athletics South Africa) is stalling the process and could potentially get her in trouble as a result.

So, these reports could be genuine and got leaked, it could be less than reputable papers jumping the gun, or it could be a story shared over a news wire service so a bunch of papers are printing it without waiting for an announcement.

Hell, my issue of Sports Illustrated was talking about this.

Well, people have been "talking about this" and the testing for quite a while. What we're looking for is confirmation of the IAAF results in the OP from a reputable source that doesn't just quote from other papers.

^ Yeah, sometimes this sort of "story" just feeds off itself. News outlet A quotes news outlet B who is quoting news outlet C, and then news outlet A takes the fact that news outlet C is running the story as confirmation, and then news outlet D sees that A, B and C are running "stories" although actually it's all still the same story, but it picks it up, too, since "everybody" else is running it...

And around and around it goes, in an incestuous newzy circle.

Edit: One of my job titles is "media relations specialist," by the way.

It's problematic when you get into this kind of situation of someone not clearly one or the other. Equality is supposed to be important yet when a situation such as this arises everyone suddenly forgets it and wants to debate the ethics of whether she's allowed to compete or not.

Clearly, she should be, regardless of her mixed gender status. She has male traits but the genetics and biology are clearly more female than male. If there were a question of whether she should be allowed to compete or not, it should have been decided before she was given the clearance.

Absolutely. It's absurd to go in post hoc and try to strip her of her winnings just because some people are unhappy about it. It's not like she was pumped up on steroids or something. She is no more or less transgendered now than she was when she entered. If they had a problem with it, they should have tackled it up front.

What I'm pissed off is how the ANC is shouting "RACISM". When will they learn to STFU and stop blaming all of their problems on Racism. Makes me wish the SADF took out the stupid members in their organization before they released Mandela.

Are we going to start keeping a list of natural (that is, inborn) traits that make competition "unfair"? Too tall, you can't compete. Fast metabolism, you can't compete. Born intersexed, you can't compete.

It's upon this very basis that the division between men and women's sports exists in the first place.

Out of curiosity, have they released DNA results? I wouldn't be surprised if they were XY. Sounds to me like an underdeveloped male child was not recognized as such and was raised, honestly, female.

She's only 18 right? Still maturing. And because of her intersexed state she may be maturing more slowly. She didn't start out winning by these margins did she? In a couple of years her testosterone levels may be closer to a standard male. As it increases so would her musculature and metabolism. I don't know if that's the way it usually works for people in her situation, but if it is, that would clearly give her an unfair competitive advantage. Any medical professionals here who can comment?

Regardless of how this turns out, she will be going through a lot of pain for a long time to come, poor thing.

If the authorities involved had a problem with it, it should have surfaced before she was allowed to compete. Wanting to take her awards away now just smacks of sour grapes.

She was seen as fit to be in the race so that settles that debate for me. As for anything further it ain't my business and I'm not at all worried about it. If she's transgendered that's fine. If she's not, well, that's fine, too. In the end, what does it really matter?

It's come out now that she has internal testes.

Yeah I saw that this morning...this person is a hermaphrodite. They're saying that she's too strong to compete against women but not strong enough to go up against the men. I forget who was giving the interview this morning but this woman recommended that for the future we may need a 3rd category for competition as in "other"...I mean Whaaaa?
