Teyla: a SciFi first?

^Yes, it did. By the time Ripley had returned to Earth in Aliens after being in suspended animation she had already died at the age of 66.

Was gonna say Sarah Connor as well.

Another TV example would be Jennifer Garners character in Alias...

Most of the examples given so far are women who are not active members of their nation's military. Aeryn left the Peacekeepers, Sarah Connor is a paramilitary, Teyla holds no rank besides being the de facto "leader" of the remaining Athosians, Ellen Ripley was a non-commissioned warrant officer aboard a civilian spacecraft and had apparently no combat training until Aliens, Sydney Bristow was an intelligence agent, Vala also had no military rank etc.

The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Beverly Crusher. Obviously her son was a teenager by the time TNG came around but she was clearly serving in Starfleet throughout his childhood. Though, 24th century Starfleet service makes that a lot easier.

^Except that Kira is not the one who ends up raising the baby.

Okay, I'll give you that. :p (But I'm sure she will still visit frequently.)

I just had some more ideas:

Beverly Crusher again - she and Picard are now married and expecting their first child. Also, I *think* Will and Deanna are also planning on having a baby

Well this isn't really "scifi" but "Get Smart"'s Agent 99 (the TV series). And technically she was a spy not a soldier, but close enough in my book.

This is why I don't read the novels. That's just fanwank.

Fanwank? How so? That wasn't my fanfic - it really happened.

And even so, I find the term 'fanwank' to be insulting. Or perhaps you'd try to explain it to Christopher himself, seeing as how he WROTE the novel and all that? :borg:

It's giving a certain, very loud section of Star Trek's fandom exactly what they want despite it making little dramatic sense. "Attached" very much ends the Picard/Beverly story in the "real" Star Trek universe, Q's imaginings in "All Good Things..." aside.

If Christopher wishes to discuss that with me then I am happy to do so on the understanding that I have not read the novel nor do I intend to.

Yeah, I'm glad I stopped reading the Trek novels. They have gotten ridiculous.

I still read New Frontier, but that was ALWAYS ridiculous.
