Ideas: What happened to Barash's species?

I would like to ask you for your ideas on what happened to Barash's species (from TNG: Future Imperfect). According to Barash, he and his mother were the last survivors of an exterminated species. But can we be sure? And who did that to them? They were hiding in the neutral zone, so maybe the invaders were Romulans? Or maybe the Borg, since it's been implied they were proving the region, and they have tendencies of taking their species to their ships and assimilating them, which may look like extermination (and, in a way is)?

Another part of it is, how the Federation would try to learn what happened to them? Would they try to learn it? Would Setion 31 be intereseted in it (and their technology)? Maybe Garak would do it? What do you think?

It could be Borg or Romulans, but I like the idea of an invader we haven't heard of yet. Something new. On finding out about it, I'd send a California-class to search for clues. ;)

Sending a Cali - class ship may be a good idea. Maybe even the Cerritos herself, or one of the ships we met in LD.

Maybe they could be Bohandi or Ansoids (alien species I made that are in my nickname).
