Teyla: a SciFi first?

how many mothers, specifically new mothers, have we seen in SciFi who are combat soldiers? how about in fiction in general?

right, should have thought of them.

I haven't had a chance to see Farscape, does Areyn get to keep her kid?

see, then Areyn I would count as coming first, but not Vala, since the priors kept Adria away from Vala and her childhood was so short.

Sharon Agathon. Granted, her daughter was a year old before she became a soldier, and a year and a half before they were reunited and she started being a mother, but she's a definite sci-fi warrior working mom.

Sorry to have spoiled that for you then and yes she gets to keep her baby.
Aeryn has a gun in her hand while delivering the kid, and then 5 minutes later she's got the baby in one arm and is shooting with the other!

Yep, she was a pistol packing mama to be sure. :techman:

Would B'lanna Torres count? I mean, granted, she didn't have her baby until the last episode, but still...

B'Elanna is like Aeryn, in that we don't get to see what happens when the dust settles, whether they decide to continue fighting as they have; but my guess would be B'Elanna, like the rest of the Voyager crew, takes a nice long vacation after their return to the Alpha Quadrent. by the time she would pick up a phaser or bat'leth again, the kid would be old enough to not be controversial to leave behind.

Kira was a surrogate who will always have a connection with Kirayoshi, but it's different from his connection with Keiko.

Sharon thought her daughter was dead and only reunited after Hera was a few years older...

Cally Tyrol, though, fought for the resistance when her son was still an infant. after reuniting with the fleet, she and the Chief both continue working.

It's far from a first in sci-fi but it is nonetheless refreshing to see a scifi character, male or female, settled down into a happy domestic life while continuing to be a action hero, they've even shown Kanaan being totally supportive or her "career" choice. I'm really hoping they keep Kanaan around in the background, I don't see any reason why a main character can't be settled down and have a family as long as it doesn't impact too heavily on the show dynamics and as we only see Kanaan once in a blue moon it won't imo.

I always liked that O'Brien had a family in DS9 I thought it gave him an added dimension and God knows Teyla needs an added dimension.

Actually, Cally wasn't with the New Caprica Resistance. She was just arrested on suspicion of being with them, but wasn't an actual member.

^^
I thought The Resistance webisodes demonstrated she had more active involvement with the resistance, at least early on? Could be wrong, though.

^I completely agree. It's going to give Teyla a new start as a character, IMHO.

A baby? I couldn't possibly care less.

She needs something, as long as it's not going to be like Claire on Lost shouting "My Baaaaaaaybaaaaaayyy!" all the time.

Since most of her people are dead, what else does she have ? I'll be bloody annoyed if they just give up on her like they gave up on Ford, Beckett, Weir and Carter. That's just lazy.

Not really, she was at the temple when the Cylons raid it looking for resistance weapons stockpiled there, but that was just coincidence.
