The BBC reports that Monty Python star Terry Jones has passed away.

Considering his poor health (primary progressive aphasia) in the last few years, this isn't so shocking but it's still incredibly sad. Especially since I just rewatched the entirety of Monty Python in tribute to Neil Innes.

Oh so sad about this. But, given his extremely poor health, at least his suffering is over.

I'm a big history buff and really enjoyed his mini -series about the Crusades, and later, Medieval lives. They were witty and fascinating little history lessons.

A world in which two of the main Pythons are dead is a world in which we are old.

My first real memory of Terry Jones was his portrayal of Mary in The Life Of Brian. It was one of the funniest things I had ever seen, especially his goggle-eyed reaction to Brian's girlfriend confronting her about giving Brian his privacy (while stark naked). Ah, British humor.:)

Loving tributes from each of the Pythons:

Michael Palin:

Terry was one of my closest, most valued friends. He was kind, generous, supportive and passionate about living life to the full. He was far more than one of the funniest writer performers of his generation, he was the complete Renaissance comedian - writer, director, presenter, historian, brilliant children's author, and the warmest, most wonderful company you could wish to have.

I feel very fortunate to have shared so much of my life with him and my heart goes out to Anna, Alison and all his family.

Eric Idle:

I loved him the moment I saw him on stage at the Edinburgh Festival in 1963. So many laughs, moments of total hilarity onstage and off we have all shared with him. It’s too sad if you knew him, but if you didn’t you will always smile at the many wonderfully funny moments he gave us

Terry Gilliam:

HE WAS A VERY NAUGHTY BOY!!...and we miss you. Terry was someone totally consumed with life.. a brilliant, constantly questioning, iconoclastic, righteously argumentative and angry but outrageously funny and generous and kind human being...

...and very often a complete pain in the ass. One could never hope for a better friend. Goodbye, Tel.

John Cleese:

Just heard about Terry J

It feels strange that a man of so many talents and such endless enthusiasm, should have faded so gently away...

Of his many achievements, for me the greatest gift he gave us all was his direction of 'Life of Brian'. Perfection

Two down, four to go

I wonder if we could have them cloned....noooo...on second thought, that's a bad idea!

The world can only handle so much.

Coincidentally I just re-watched Ripping Yarns and it was superb, they really went for authenticity and historical accuracy and production values.

I loved Terry Jones's work onscreen and behind the camera, I can't really say any more than that.

I put that up 6 years ago and they decide to block it now? YT really, really sucks. Dispute is in, so it should work for now.

Having had an ex-coworker's father go through this, I can say that Terry was probably 'gone' before he was 'gone'. So hopefully he didn't suffer. It was probably harder on his family than on him.
Having gotten that out of the way, I purchased the Monty Python 'Norwegian Blue' Box Set for Christmas and have been slowly working my way through the episodes/seasons and I've come to think that Terry was the most underappreciated.
He was great at playing middle-aged women and the slightly anonymous-types.
