Starting to get Lost - cos people keep telling me to

I've never watched it, but when I happened to walk into the Age Concern shop today and see the complete Region 1 season 1 DVD set, still in its cellophane wrapper, for £2.99, I thought "what the hell, at that price I'll give it a go..."

Dang! What a great price! I paid 60 US dollars for the Season 1 DVD, and I don't think I ever even watched it!

You'll be hooked and become an addict like Top41 with Oz (see the General TV & Media forum). Enjoy. :D

£2.99? What a bargain!

Hope you enjoy the show. My sister has just started watching Lost after some much-enthused recommendations on my part. She loves it so far! :D

Watching the pilot now...

Surprised to see that future seasons have such varying lengths.

ETA - OK, we're hooked for the moment! nice mysteries set up - what are the things in the trees, what pulled the pilot out (it sounded like the same sound effect used for the T Rex in Jurassic Park - there better be dinos in this sooner or later, but surely they can't be as it'd be too obvious...)

On with the second half...

The fourth season was a victim of the writers strike, and instead of trying to air everything during one more season, the network convinced them to spread it out over two.

having watched both halves of the pilot, it seems worth having started to watch. Polar bears, eh? And Saiyid's the only trustworthy (if you can call it that) one among them. (No, seriously, he's been through a losing war and still around, so can't be stupid in a survival situation.)

I'm still not sure which one's Sawyer and which one's Boone though, but I'm sure that'll be made clear...
ETA_ might as well make this a bit of a "belated from the start thread for us latecomers"

Just wait until you get to the episode Walkabout. I just remember my mouth dropping open with the reveal in that episode. It's still one of my favourites.

The shorter seasons in years 4-6 (well, 4-5 so far, one presumes it will extend to 6) actually make sense in a way; the show can sort of be divided up into two halves, 1-3 and 4-6.

There's a notable change of format in season 4, and accelerating the storytelling goes very well with that change.

Unlike us, you don't need to hang in there on faith that "they know what they're doing/there will be answers/the story won't just go off the rails and crash & burn and make us all feel like idiots for watching it, year in and year out." The story does hang together, you do get answers, it does make sense, it's entirely worth it. Best series on TV other than Dexter. :D Have fun!

Also known as, one of Lost's jaw-dropping plot twists. There are two mammoth ones, and countless others along the way, which are just normal stunning sorts of twists. I hope you've managed to stay reasonably unspoiled

Definitely don't read spoilers. Let the show take you on the wild ride.

If you're truly liking it, you're probably already done with Season 1 now.

That's a relief - it took me about half a season to go from hooked to "never mind" on Heroes, and let's not even mention The X Files...

Ye, so far - I know there's a time travel season finale within the past couple of seasons and that's about it.

Watched Tabula Rasa and Walkabout last night - that is a good WTF reveal at the end of Walkabout! (as soon as Locke started on about boars, the wife said "you'd be him" - the difference is I know more about hunting the buggers.)

Still, I wonder what the monsters in the forest, which he saw and which I presume killed the boar for him, are. We better find out and they better be good. I'd still prefer dinosaurs, but reckon that's too obvious.

So far Saiyid and Kate are my favourite characters. (Oddly, on one of those "Which character are you" personalty quiz memes I tried over a year ago, I came out as Saiyid. I hope that continues to be a good result.)

It's true that Locke sometimes pretends to know more than he really does, but he actually is a fairly good hunter/tracker. He probably killed the boar himself.

I agree, but that was an interesting point. I'd never considered that, uh... the thing (trying to stay spoiler-free) may have killed the boar for Locke. In light of, er... recent events, it's an interesting thought. Just goes to show that after all these years people can still find new possibilities in the old episodes.

And well into Season 3.

That's how it worked for me. I blew through the first 3 seasons in a matter of days!

Dunno when I'll be able to get season 2 onwards though, what with it still being bloody Narnia here (and I'll want a bargain price!)

Anyway, watched White Rabbit - good again. The implication seems to be that either the island raised the dead (unlikely or they wouldn't have had to burn the fuselage with the bodies) or the Oz authorities conned Jack by giving him an empty coffin cos he hadn't filled in the forms...

I'm still in two minds about Locke - dunno whether to consider him a favourite character cos he gets things done and is the most practical other than Saiyid, or not as still comes over as a mix of stalker and pedophile...

It just seemed obvious to me - he chases the boar, then whatever it is looks down at him, at which point I presume he loses track of the boar, but then we see him dragging its carcass into camp. Which is doubly amazing given than the best way to catch a boar is have it driven towards you to impale itself on a spear, not to somehow leap on it and cut its throat.

I just read that as Locke has made some sort of deal/friendship/whatever with whatever it is. Or at the very least that it wasn't interested in him (perhaps it's drawn to movement, went after the boar as Locke was standing still, and then he brought the carcass home after it moved on)

But don't tell me! If I wanted to know I'm sure I could google it all, but I don't. Just wanted to say that's how I came to that thought.

Don't you dare look anything up. This show is incredible if you remain spoiler-free.

I'm still kicking myself for letting myself be spoiled about the season three finale. It was still cool to watch, but not in the "Holy f***ing s***, no way!!!" way it should have been.
