Star Wars: End of General Dodonna's briefing?

BoredShipCapt'n

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Luke and Wedge talk over part of General Dodonna's speech after he says "The shaft is ray-shielded so you'll have to use proton torpedoes."

At the end Dodonna says "Are there any questions?" but I've never been able to make out what he says in between. Does anyone know?

According to this script, Dodonna never asks if anyone has any questions.

DODONNA
Only a precise hit will set up a
chain reaction. The shaft is ray-
shielded, so you'll have to use proton
torpedoes.

Luke is sitting next to Wedge Antilles, a hotshot pilot about
sixteen years old.

WEDGE
That's impossible, even for a
computer.

LUKE
It's not impossible. I used to bull's-
eye womp rats in my T-sixteen back
home. They're not much bigger than
two meters.

DODONNA
Man your ships! And may the Force be
with you!

The group rises and begins to leave.

According to this script, Dodonna never asks if anyone has any questions.
Yes, but underneath Luke and Wedge you can hear him asking that during the shot of Threepio right before "Then man your ships..." And he says other stuff, before that, while they're talking.

Wedge is only 16?

That's because when that scene was shot (before the battle scenes were), Wedge was supposed to be played by this guy:

7953-18163.jpg

But Colin Higgins couldn't get the line right (It was originally much longer, with Wedge scoffing at the idea of 'barnyard marksmanship') and blew take after take, so he was fired immediately after "Cut! Print!" on a 'close enough' shortened line reading, and Denis Lawson (who you may notice wasn't in the briefing room) stepped into the X-Wing Fighter and into legend instead.

And what Dodonna's saying under Luke and 'Wedge's' lines is: "Red Squadron will cover Gold on the first run, then Red Squadron will make the next run. Any questions?"

Hey, thanks! Where did you get that from?

Now that I know what it is, it sounds more like: "... then Red Squadron will make its run."

Yeah, I think you've got that last part right now that I listen to it again (and again, and again, and again as I did for the rest of it). So the line is: "Red Squadron will cover Gold on the first run, then Red Squadron will make its run." Thanks for the correction.

As one of many who continually saw the SW trilogy, I knew something was up when an unnamed fighter pilot seemed talk with 'Wedge's' voice, but didn't look like the Wedge we knew. Apparently, Colin Higgins's voice was dubbed over as well...

Was this character ever given a name in the expanded universe?

Fake Wedge.

I think it's possible that he's saying "Red Squadron will cover for Gold on the first run." Just the timing of it suggests another syllable in there, and the wording is consistent with the later "Turn to point-oh-five, we'll cover for you."

(I also still seem to hear a bit of the "r" sound leading into "any questions," which is why I'm thinking it's preceded by "are there.") :)

Fake Wedge.

Or an Imperial spy.

Probably a reason the Death Star wasn't anticipating the snub-nosed fighter attack that evaded their turbolasers....;)

(Joel's little nerd moment).

Wedge Antilles - he's not treated as a second character.

As someone who grew up with the original SW trilogy and suffered through the prequels, I'm very well aware of that.;)

However, Colin Higgins obviously wasn't the Wedge we came to know (especially since Denis Lawson would appear later on in the film as 'Wedge') so I wondered if Higgins was given another name? (Other than 'fake Wedge,' of course...lol).

I haven't read the novelization in decades, so I wonder if that line was still attributed to 'Wedge' or Gold-something or Red-something.

There was a case when a character's name was heard, but the character wasn't seen or pointed out until years later:

For example, the character 'Hobbie' wasn't really seen in "Empire Strikes Back" even though Luke continually spoke with him over radio. I think 'Hobbie' - according to Wookiepedia - was eventually said to be the character who asked "Two fighters against a Star Destroyer?" before the Battle of Hoth. (So, yeah, technically he wasn't 'seen' for years, until it was pointed out who Hobbie was - or at least, which character was going to be designated as Hobbie).

Yes, I distinctly remember in that scene from the novelization the Colin Higgins character was identified as a pilot "with the unlikely name of Wedge Antilles."
