Star Trek: Vanguard (Or Let's Pitch A New Trek TV Series)

So skimming through the bible and a thought: Who would like to see this as a TV show? I think maybe you can get some of these actors as well. Thoughts?

Maybe it's just me, but I'd prefer relative no-name actors to some of the big names in the series bible. And they'd have to find a replacement for Paul Winfield, as he passed ten years ago.

If you'd asked this question when I first started to read Vanguard, I'd have said "YES!" before you'd finished speaking. However, now that I've read the series and got specific character images & voices in my head, seeing a real person in that role would be difficult to accept.
What I'd love to see is another TOS era show with a similarly diverse set of characters that hasn't been established in prose somewhere (or maybe a couple of prose "cameos").
And while I'm wishing, a post-The Fall series, my own starship, and a pony!

I feel the same way, which is why I created a character from scratch for the fan fiction I'm working on. She doesn't exist anywhere else in Star Trek, which made it easy because I could make up her entire backstory. I have an actress in mind for her but don't have to contend with someone else's interpretation how the character should be played.

I'd love to see that happen, but only if it's produced for a network like HBO. I just can't picture it being treated as it should on a broadcast network. As for the cast, while a few characters did match their suggested actors in my mind's eye (mainly Zeke Fisher and Tim Pennington), in such a scenario I think I'd prefer to see mostly new and unknown or little-known actors inhabit the roles.

It's a lovely idea, but an impossible one.

Creating a TV series is a difficult and expensive process. One of the rewards for creators is ownership of the resulting property. But the more people who own a piece of it, the less they each get paid.

Of course, Star Trek already owns Vanguard, lock, stock, and barrel. If someone decided to make a TV series out of it, they'd have to credit me, Marco, Dayton, and Kevin in some capacity — but they wouldn't need to pay us, as we surrendered all our rights to this intellectual property when we signed our contracts to write the books.

But there's still the pride element to consider. The folks who spend decades working their way up the Hollywood food chain to become show-runners and show creators don't do it so they can share credit or compromise their artistic ideas. They create TV shows to craft something to fit their own vision of what it should be. Why would someone with the chance to make their own mark on Star Trek by creating a new TV series want to compromise their vision by trying to film the one we cooked up?

The only way I can imagine Vanguard ever being filmed would be if a fan production team wanted to use its resources and talent to bring it to life. Which I would find very flattering, as long as they didn't make a hash of it. But still, if they have that kind of talent and resources, why not create their own series and characters?

I don't know what the next Star Trek TV series will be, but I'm fairly certain it won't be Vanguard.

My biggest fear about an adaptation of any the series I love, like Vanguard, is how much they would change things. Hell, even Game of Thrones has changed things and it's been a remarkably close adaptation. There have been a lot of good adaptations over the years but there have been a lot of bad ones too. The only way I would want to see an adaptation would if the original authors were involved.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to see a Vanguard TV series, but it would have to be a well done adaptation done by a fan of the books, who was willing to work with the original creators.

In homage to Original Series Trek, I demand that Jetanien be portrayed by a man in an obvious rubber suit, a la the Gorn captain. With his face an obvious mask like the Tellarites'.

I don't know how the professional writers do it, but when working on fanfic, I always cast my crews as a point of reference for describing aspects of their appearance and such. It helps me to visualise the action in my head before hammering it out on the keyboard.

QUICK! Someone send David Benioff and D.B. Weiss copies of Vanguard!

Shudder to think what would happen if Star Trek turned into a Game of Thrones type of show.

I referenced them only because of their obvious love for the source material that they are currently working with, not because I think Trek would be served better by a show full of power struggles, backstabbing, murder and palace intrigue.

If something like Vanguard ever made it to the small screen, I would hope that the writers/showrunner(s) loved the books and would want to stay as true to the source material as possible :)

I'd prefer if they use the books for inspiration (and subsequently expand their canon to include the litverse and STO continuities ;)) and create something new instead of treading old ground. VGD is already great - it wouldn't gain anything on TV.

That sounds like a Mirror Universe show.

That's actually brilliant. A Trek TV series that's solely set in Mirror Universe.

Only if it's an adaptation of The Sorrows of Empire and Rise Like Lions.

Otherwise, it's just naked people stabbing each other. And I've already watched Spartacus.

The best we could get is a mini series. i would be fine with that.
