Which begs the question ... who'd get busy with The Diviner? :barf:

We don't know how Vau N'Akat perceive beauty or what necessitates attraction to someone (nor do we know how they usually reproduce).
That's number one.
Number two would be the use of medical technology to create an offspring (the implication being that the Diviner and Gwyn being the last two of their species) - which would in all likelihood eliminate the need for a partner - we're actually experimenting with this technology right now... so you could get a viable offspring from say two men, or two females... or just one gender without needing the other - couple that with artificial wombs, and there you go.

Some species reproduce asexually too... perhaps its a once in a lifetime option for the males of Diviner's species.

Also, projecting your our own notions of 'beauty' onto another (albeit fictional) species is very speciest.

After all, humans would usually never consider having sex with other species in the animal kingdom (humans are also considered animals)... and yet, two members of the same species usually DO find something appealing in each other - its mostly hormones going wild, but we've seen from various studies that physical attraction can also play a part.

I think Gwyn was created with tech.

Of course, it's possible the Diviner wasn't always so awful and had a wife who died after having Gwyn. I picture a Vau N'Akat woman who wasted away from grief and neglect, watching her husband's obsession make him progressively more cold and distant.

My God, the man wants the Protostar even more than his own DAUGHTER!

Hate it when Trek steals from Marvel.

Don't think this particular aspect was stolen from Marvel.
We had previous situations in older Trek where the heroes were actively trying to prevent highly advanced alien tech falling into the wrong hands... or even UFP 'enemies' wanting technology UFP created... the Genesis device and USS Prometheus being examples.

We've also had examples where the villains ended up obsessed with SF heroes because they put a 'kink' into their plans.

The Diviner wanting the Protostar more than his daughter could be described as just another 'evolution' of those situations... not specifically Marvel related... also, Trek didn't go so far to actually kill the daughter for the purpose of obtaining the said technology... something which Marvel 'reset' with time travel anyway.

Xena had a blind Cyclops (Care to take a guess as to who took out his one eye? ;) )

Xena (for everyone who's too young to remember the show :) )

I honestly didn't get that vibe.

As I said, the Diviner clearly felt conflicted when he left Gwyn behind. It's not like he just tossed her aside without a second thought. I think he was genuinely hurt by it. And you'll notice it takes him awhile to make the final decision.

He said he had no choice...and, at least on some level, I believe him. We'll just have to see exactly why he wants the Protostar so badly. Perhaps the Vau N'Akat are a dying race, and he sees the ship as the salvation of his people?

They weren't all that close (The Diviner called her his "progeny").

I think this is exactly the kind of situation they are going for. In fact it would be very interesting if in the end his goals were justified even if his actions to reach them obviously questionable.

^ I actually see the Diviner as the opposite of Dukat.

At first, Dukat was a minor annoyance who could be friendly, yet grew more malevolent over the course of the series. I'm sensing the Diviner will go the other direction: he might seem like a straight-up villain right now but is gradually becoming more "human" and possibly even compassionate.

Like I said, I can absolutely see the Diviner sacrificing himself to save Gwyn...Dukat wouldn't even know what that meant.
