Star Trek: Nemesis - As Never Seen Before (Update)

Hello everyone¡

It´s been a while since my first Reddit post about this project: https://www.reddit.com/r/startrek/comments/ixu0fk/star_trek_nemesis_as_never_seen_before/ and now I can give you an update.

I´m currently working with 3 versions:

-Main Version: Lots of cut or removed scenes, few brand new footage, few additional footage from the deleted scenes.
-Alternate Ending Version: It´s basically the same but using an edited version of the "Alternate Ending" scene.
-Extended Cut: This one will use all the deleted scenes that could be restored in an acceptable quality.
At request, I might be doing a 4th one mixing the Extended Cut with the Main Version ending, which is more similar to the Theatrical Version ending.

Every additional scene requires new music and video production so the first versions to be completed will be the Main Version and the Alternate Ending Version. As the project is still in progress, any advices regarding the edit or if anyone´s willing to help, just contact me here in Reddit.

Here are some examples of the upgrading of the deleted scenes:

Are you going to correct the vertical squeeze that's on the "restored" deleted scenes? Picard and Data look rather squat.

I would say the "restored" versions look more accurate than the original deleted scenes, which were squeezed horizontally to my eyes.

Mayhap, but a bit over-corrected.

The remastered shots are quite a good result considering how rough the original deleted scene looks.
To my completely unprofessional eye, it could also use a de-redden and a little more playing with contrast and black levels.
Quick and rudimentary example:

That´s a good question that I´d like to clarify. Original source video seems to be squeezed horizontally as you say. So when you convert them to full screen (without the container size), horizontal black bars are narrower than in the theatrical version:
Chateau Picard Source video as it comes in the Blu Ray Bonus: https://imgur.com/fRQ3APL
Chateau Picard Source video upscaled to full screen: https://imgur.com/PQt4gHd
Chateau Picard Cleaned Upscaled 1080p: https://imgur.com/RNOnChc

Original source version leaves slim vertical black bars, so it can´t fit Full HD resolution preserving its Aspect Ratio, which is a rather weird 0.889. So when you upscale and convert to 1080p and 1:1 PAR (Pixel Aspect Ratio) the picture is vertically and horizontally stretched to fill both the AR and that bars as you can see in the screenshots.

If you upscale the 2nd screenshot picture to fill the vertical bars, and then change the PAR to 1:1 Square, you get that same look as the first post screenshots, with horizontal black bars exactly as in the theatrical version.

At this point I´m not sure which one would be the correct version.

I absolutely agree and I like how that looks. The reason I used so much contrast, a bit hidden by the colour correction, which is a bit exaggerated as you mentioned, is the banding and bright haloing that appears as soon as you put a little bright, less contrast there. Check this area in your screenshot (https://imgur.com/0UONW1V), the banding is less noticeable in my version, on expense of the over-contrast / pink-red colours. If you are willing to, I´d like to try your version using a debanding filter to see how it goes. But we need to solve the Aspect Ratio issue before that. Regarding that matter, your version seems to be at some point between the forced 1:1 Theatrical AR and the source video.

One thing to check is the aspect ratio of the image itself, ignoring the black letterboxing. Since this is anamorphic Panavision we're talking about, it should be 2.35:1... assuming Paramount didn't crop or zoom in on the original footage to begin with.

...but considering the presentation of the deleted scenes, I wouldn't use the location of the bars as a true guide.

They did :(. Original source video was horizontally stretched and the AR lost consequently. So I´ve played a bit with the Pan/Crop options until finding a good AR for the image itself, resulting in something very similar to what @Tosk uploaded, then cropping to fit the actual movie black bars. Unfortunately this can´t be exactly as it should but the difference could be insignificant.
This is how it looks:

Have to say, as Tosk mentioned above, these are impressive results given the poor quality of the source material.

I tried my own fan edit of Nemesis about 15 years ago but never finished it, so I’m following this with interest. The thread for it on this board is probably still around somewhere.

I'd like to check it. Any ideas about edit change are welcome! In fact, I've used some ideas from an edit called "Antithesis". I think that's really good because we Trek fans know what's wrong with the movie.

I´ve recently discovered one curious thing about Nemesis Home Video releases. All of them, from DVD to 4K, suffer colour banding during a lens flare with the first appearance of Romulus at the beginning of the movie. In the website where I´ve read that, they assumed this problem was baked-in to the original visual effect, but I think it came from the original master used for the DVD and the old Blu Ray which seems to be the same used for the 4K version, as they are keeping the non-original 2:35:1 aspect ratio. They just did a new colour grading and less DNR. I´ve also found colour banding in the initial Paramount Logo. I´ve fixed this for my edit, totally or partially, but it looks much better now. Check the screenshots:

The 4K remaster of the extended cut of The Motion Picture plus the inclusion of previously unseen deleted scenes (some in HD, some in SD) surprised me.

I hope to one day see the additional half hour of scenes deleted from Nemesis which were never released. Now that all thirteen films are available on 4K Blu-ray in Dolby Vision, extended cuts with Atmos tracks (only the original film and the Kelvin trilogy are currently available in Atmos) and possibly improved CGI would enable Paramount to rerelease them one more time.

Any news on this?
Hi. I will give an update here and on Reddit in a week. There will be a Standard and a Extended Cut. Standard Version at the moment will include 4 of the deleted scenes, while the Extended Cut would include 6-7. The progress is going really good. .I can say now that the Standard Version is almost completed and it's looking awesome. The deleted scenes restoration is now even better than in the screenshots/comparisons I've been sharing and the new music is great.
