A full season of the latest Star Trek series is over and in the can. What did you think? There doesn't seem to be a general consensus, since opinions are all over the place, but a lot of fans have taken note of a number of positives. The show is a pretty decent homage to the TNG era with the same general aesthetic, lots of references and more than a few easter eggs. Mike McMahan is clearly passionate about TNG and it shows. Add in some good and often clever humor and you've got the perfect show.
Or do we?
A lot of viewers also feel that something is missing. Is it too over the top? For some, maybe. Is it too episodic? Maybe that too. Personally, I think that we need more character development. Something that makes us interested and invested in the characters themselves. Maybe that's one big fix. And fortunately the show is starting to give us some of that, at least with Ensign Mariner, most notably with her underachieving ways. If they can build on that and even find that spark with the other characters (who all have potential), then maybe we'll have a show that more of the naysayers can come to root for.
In this season finale, Boimler deals with Mariner's secret. Enjoy. Discuss.
