Star Trek: Infinite Space

Over the years I've played half a dozen different free Trek browser games of that kind (e.g. the German http://stgc.de/ has been around for ages). I really wonder if this one will offer any improvement.

Got this email today:

When Star Trek: Infinite Space was announced in 2010, many people were quick to critize the decision to create a Star Trek games within the confines of a browser. The main concerns that people voiced were related to graphics and gameplay; just how could you create a game with good graphics and good gameplay within browser window.

Infinite Space is being developed on the Unity3D engine, which, as Hailing Frequency pointed out several months ago, is a very powerful flash powered 3D engine for browsers. The engine is so powerful that companies such as EA Sports and Lucasarts have used it to release Tiger Woods and Lego Star Wars games respectivly.

In a video released yesterday on German TV channel 3-Sat, we got our first real look at Infinite Space……….and the results are truly groundbreaking. In the video, we are able to see full 3D environments, ample customization options, both 3rd-person ground play

With a 7 figure budget (into the millions of euros range), Infinite Space is looking like its going to be the success that everyone has been so skeptical about – truly taking browser based gaming boldy where it has not gone before! If you do not believe us, check out the video below. Note: The video is in german but has english subtitles. (view video in thread at http://hailingfrequency.com/boards/...te-space-available-browser-games-boldy-going/)

In addition, we have created a gallery of images from Infinite Space, including from the video which you can view at http://www.hailingfrequency.com/boards/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=89

I forget, is it a free-to-play game or a monthly fee with this one? I am just trying to figure out how they plan on making their money back? WOnder if it is going to give STO a run for it's money after-all?

According to the video it's free and financed through the game's item shop.

Very cool!

Well I finally was able to watch the video and see the pics and it looks amazing!!!

A few things right off that bat is the fact it is DS9 era (which we knew) but to see JUST DS9 era is jarring (In a good way) coming from STO (which is a hodgepodge of ALL eras) and immediatly, sets the immersion factor WAY up there for me! No flippin asteroids to be seen!!! Yay! I don't want this thing to be set in the FAR future with Cryptics new clunky ships and the 200 year old ships all flying around, so so far, it is edging out STO right out the gate for me!

Also the uniforms! Again, set in ONE time frame, we get ONE set of uniforms! Thank god for that! The hodgepodge of era's, ships and uniforms drives me crazy in STO! So far, this game looks amazing and can't wait to play it!! Shoot, now I am questoning my desire to buy a lifetime sub to STO or not...

Yeah, I agree that the Unity engine is quite good. I don't really think it's flash though, but an entirely different technology that puts those other 3D shockwave games to shame. If anyone would like to get an idea of what Unity is capable of, check out this demo:

Quite impressive, no? It's pretty processor intensive, but make sure bring up the menu to turn on all of the atmospheric effects. It actually looks more like a current generation console game compared to a browser game. With that said, I do think it will give STO a run for the money. At the very least, it will make them rethink their strategy.

Last time I checked developers had the choice of writing their custom code for the engine in C#, Javascript or Boo (a relatively unknown language that's derived from Python).

That flew right above my head. I was speaking in terms of aesthetics and end results and what a consumer gets to see as a result.
