STAR TREK GAMES SUCK

I do worry when somebody lists "great" Trek games, and one of them was never actually released. I love Trek, but aside from 25th Anniversary and Judgment Rites, there's very few that have come close to being among my favourite games.

Well i did state it was unreleased, i just like annoying myself with it......and you never know, with Interplay once again on the rise maybe they had Vulcan fury hidden away in a secret underground vault just waiting....

Holy cow mr. itchy trigger finger:wtf:. Most of the games ARE pretty bad and the better ones were skins copied onto previous game engines. I know it's not the most popular opinion in the room, but he shouldn't be warned for that.

My reasoning is that if a poster went into the ENT forum and posted a thread entitled "Enterprise sucks" they'd be treated similaraly!

And yes, I agree some games are utter crap.

^Again, the problem wasn't entirely his point, but the way it was said. Just like you don't go into a football forum and say, "Football sucks and you are all silly sluts for liking it!!", it's probably not advisable to come in here and make a blanket statement such as , "All Star Trek games suck." Not a good way to make fast friends. :techman:

I agree with Daedelus. If this were the relicnews forums that post would have been deleted about two mins after it was posted.

Glad I never frequent there. If you can't handle criticism on the internet then you have issues.

It was hardly criticism, more the barking of a junkyard dog. Strict moderation doesn't mean deleting criticism, it means deleting trolling, which this clearly was.

Also, it's hard to debate that the OP was trolling if you use the helpful "Find More Posts By monetteman" feature to see the other pearls of wisdom he's been dropping around the board.

Well, I'm really enjoying Conquest on the Wii. I expected Star Fleet Battles Lite and that's what I'm getting. Doesn't make it less fun and in fact there's more fan service in it than I expected. There's things I would have liked to be done differently, but I still think at it's core it's successful at what it does.

EFI&II weren't really "skins" on other games -- they used the Quake engine, sure, but they went beyond Quake in terms of execution and story. I'd rather someone take a good existing engine and be able to focus more on storyline and acting then focus more on the engine and not have enough time for design, etc.

Here's hoping the new movie changes things. Why Paramount (I guess CBS Entertainment in this case) doesn't try to leverage this property to the hilt is quite beyond me. You can have no shows or films, but people will still buy a good game!

I've just started on EF2. Unlike some older 3d games, it supports AA and AF. Not much need of AA with the high rez but the AF has it looking pretty good. The Borg look fantastic. Good voice work.
I also just came across a CD version of 25th. Rites I have on CD, but 25th I've never played with the voiceovers. Sweet. Those two games could be remade so fairly easily, it boggles the mind. Just a standard adventure game interface, but with some of the best voiceover work ever. Shatner's rhythm is a bit questionable at times - but that's him - but Nimoy and Kelley are spot-on, this stuff is pure gold. McCoy/Spock banters. I just know these are going to get remade, it's like a big obvious juicy project just waiting to happen.

Yeah, it's a common problem with games made from movies/TV series, most of them aren't really good.
For example:
Matrix: 1 crappy (Enter the Matrix) and 1 good game (Path of Neo)
Star Wars: a few good/great ones (like KOTOR 1-2, Jedi Knight series) and many mediocre and bad ones

Same with Trek, a few good ones (EF 1-2, Bridge Commander and The Fallen are good, some of the others mentioned here could be, I haven't played with them yet), some mediocre (Away Team) and of course numerous bad ones.

I think the problem is mostly with the publishers, the either pick developers who aren't up to the task or they don't give them enough time, or both... I mean, the Trek universe should be a gold mine for games, there are so many possibilities, yet only a few good games have been made so far. Like many of you, I also hope the new movie will be succesful, maybe a new series will start too and that will help the gaming side of Star Trek too. And I really hope Abrams and/or the studio execs at Paramount will talk to Bethesda, so they'll treat the games with more respect and care.

PS: I agree with the moderator's warning of the OP too, criticism is good and should be present but not in that manner.

I agree Necros, which is why I find the complete lack of adventure games for Trek, when that is clearly the number one genre that SHOULD be done given the nature of the series all the more confusing.

Heck the limited nature of the films is confusing. If TNG hadn't been a 7-year TV show with all the depth entailed the movies would be even more rubbish than they already are, the formula of space battle/villain fight is so overused.

I think part of problem is that Paramount seems to have close to zero involvement outside of collecting the license money. The games and the books could be the main vehicle for keeping the franchise going in the absence of cinema/tv -- why not do games that tie in with the novels? It's all baffling. If it wasn't for copyright concerns people could just make Star Trek games as they see fit; couldn't be any worse than the virtual desert that exists now!
