News Star Trek: Discovery – No One Is Safe

I'm still sad about Captain Georgiou she was awesome and I thought she was going to come back but then
Ash ate her! I guess theres the mirror multiverse but still!

There's a balance you have to strike when doing the kind of show where main characters can die. If you kill a few characters in the dramatically best moments can have a huge impact. But if you kill characters left and right like 24 it makes characters feel completely expendable and the audience starts to feel like the writers are jerking around their emotions for shock value.

I'd be surprised if Lorca makes it through the second season, which is a shame as he's the most interesting character.

Well the show does have some disposable bridge characters that might be considered weekly redshirt material. Well known enough to not just be someone we have never seen before but not important enough to miss or really impact the crew dynamic.

That won't happen until we are introduced to a person who would replace him as Captain (replace him "in-universe" as the Captain of the ship AND replace his Captain character in the dramatic telling of the story).

The only character we have seen so far who could have replaced him was Giorgiou, and she's quite dead at the moment. Neither Saru nor Burnham would work in the "dramatic story-telling" department as Captain. One might argue that they somehow become Captain of the ship "in-universe", but that's a different argument.

What modern show DOESNT have main characters die? Thinking at least as far back as Rome, when Niobe died. It's not really a Game of Thrones or Walking Dead thing. Except for the antiquarians who were hoping Discovery would be TNG 2.0, I doubt very few people are expecting a show where there's a new slightly hackneyed adventure every week and the good guys come out unscathed and largely forgetful of the events.

If anything its less a GoT thing and more a soap opera thing.

Season 1.5 will open up with the Discovery exploding and Captain Garrovick of the USS Farragut will investigate this odd wreckage from another universe possibly.

...and he opens a closet in Lorca's man-cave, and out pops the cloud creature Lorca was keeping.

Moments earlier:

Burnham: "Captain Lorca, what are you doing?! The ship is about to explode and you locked all the escape pods! That's it, I'm mutinying, again!"
Lorca: "Sorry, Burnham, it's too late. I just injected myself with a dikironium compound that will transform me into a creature capable of wreaking havoc on the galaxy. I will avenge your death." (turns into a cloud creature as various explosions rock and cripple the Discovery)

Mark Twain's critique of Fenimore Cooper's "The Deerslayer" contains a point that perfectly sums up my ennui regarding the way characters in "Discovery" have been written:

But the reader of the "Deerslayer" tale dislikes the good people in it, is indifferent to the others, and wishes they would all get drowned together.

So whoever gets snuffed is no great loss at this point. Burnham, Sarek, and Amanda are safe by default, logically. *yawn*
