Star trek Communicator for Sale - its finally here

The Star Trek communicator is real -- and it's now on sale.

When Star Trek's Captain Picard presses his communicator badge, he can instantly speak with any member of his crew -- even when they've beamed down to a planet or a nearby spaceship.

A company called OnBeep has made the Star Trek communicator badge a reality (well, except for the spaceship part). It even looks like the real deal.

Does it anticipate your commands? Picard's badge transmits to the recipient before he's finished telling it who he wants to talk to.

No, that is yet another limitation of our technology at the time. And I suppose a limit relating to plot devices for that matter, because seeing as how I don't see how that is possible without some onboard computer, I don't see how that could be made to work.

No offense to Star Trek but the whole concept of communicators as depcited TNG forward was stupid to begin with. Firstly, most people want to have private conversations not group conversation with another person. Secondly, how exactly would they work in a room when multiple people are trying to communicate?

Also, I'll never forget the Voyager episode where Tuvok speaks with Kim on his communicator from ~ 10 feet away as if no one else would hear the conversation.

Modern cell phones and the devices the secret service employs to communicate with each other are far more practical in these situations.

I don't see anyone interested in this device. Shit, I have a Bluetooth ear piece and quite frankly, I get uncomfortable speaking into the device in public because ostensibly it appears I'm talking to myself.

I don't know about the military, but the police here are having non-private conversations over their radios that everyone else (particularly the rest of the police officers) can hear. I don't see why Starfleet would be different.

Though it boggles the mind that they didn't have both options during away missions with the exception of the two times that they used implants.

One thing I do suspect is that the communicators in Star Trek use a standard communication protocol that's not a secret, and can communicate with any other devices including communicators from other worlds. A proprietary gadget that only talks to other owners of the same gadget, creating a closed network open to privileged customers only, is the polar opposite of that.

You've never worked in an office, have you?

I can have a conversation with the person next to me, and the person next to that person won't hear what we are talking about.

Quit swearing to begin with. You make yourself seem that less intelligent.

Secondly the reason why Starfleet is able to discuss in open the issues that they do is because in the Star Trek Universe or in Star Fleet at least there is no monetary gain from ease dropping on a conversation where you could then 'tell on the people' who were talking in a manner that you didn't like hoping to get a reward for making them adhere to a pattern of speech that you are made to adhere to.

Privacy in the 21st century is often compromised because those who are lowly in monetary status or education will often times try to bring those who are more intelligent and have more money down to their level just to make such people feel better about theirselves. Such people blame the rich and educated for there problems because they believe that everything should be given to them just they assume the rich and educated have been given everything.

So open conversations in TNG is not stupid. It's reality because no one is able to twist what you say around on you to try and make a bar of pressed latinum from...unless your Ferengi...and trust me I work with ALLOT of Ferengi's.

Besides if you overhear two or three people speaking about something and haven't been invited is it really your business to get involved unless asked to? No...but then again if your a Ferengi then yes it.

For me personally I am always to busy thinking about FTL theories and what I am welding to be concerned with the "Mama Drama" at work.

So you work with ferengi? This is all some roleplay for you? Then could you please take it to another forum besides sci/tech?

Stop trying to police other people's language. (I typed this in my mod voice.)

Nothing in this post makes any sense. I sense a pattern.

OMG Dryson are you serious? Back here in the real world and not part of the fictional world of Star Trek, most people want to have private conversations with the person on the other end of the line.

I really don't see this device even being practical for first responders because in many situations they likely couldn't even hear what's being said.

These,"communicators," seem more like a toy to me than a real life practical device. I gave even a real example where even using a blue tooth ear piece for many people is awkward let alone being around someone and sharing both ends of the conversation with strangers.

The only reason communicators in Star Trek made sense was that it made it easier for audiences to follow the conversations. :p

Well exactly. And the turbo lifts seem to take the exact amount of time the dialogue needs as well. ;) However, DS9 did a great job of not translating the Breen's language but still making the audience understand what was being said during the conversation.

On topic: Unless I'm missing something Emilia these real life, "communicators," have no practical functionality at all or at a minimum very little functionality because of privacy limitations.

"Star Trek Communicators" have been around for a while. I remember wanting a set back when Mego advertised them in the 1970s.

Excellent.... I would only want one from the Original Series :)
