Star Trek: CAPTAIN PIKE

They have all these Hollywood actors, which is fine (...Chase Masterson as a lowly lieutenant?), but to gain some legitimacy they need to ace the casting of young Spock.

This covers the different types of missions that Starfleet might be expected to cover. Considering Axanar is using the Four Years War arc, a FASA creation after all, it would be cool if this production could alter the SCD to one of the FASA ones, probably the Military Ops if that fits their story best.

Military operations and the like had nothing to do with Christopher Pike and the Cage version of the Enterprise...

^ Well, that was the only mission of Pike's Enterprise that we ever saw on screen. So we don't know what other hijinks they may have been involved in over the years of their mission.

And he needs to be able to break out into a grin when he sees singing plants, pronounce "can't" as "cohn't," and be shouting all the time.

"THE WOMEN!!!"

[/I]Apparently, they didn't get the memo about there being no female starship captains in this era. (Yes, I'm one of THOSE fans.)

Something crying out to be ignored/retconned anyway, surely? Axanar has, at least.

Why? To impose our modern cultural values on a depiction of the 23rd century? Surely cultural mores in 200 years are going to be vastly different than those on earth today. Also considering the interaction with other alien species who will have vastly different cultures and ways of thinking. Granted it was an imposition of 1960s cultural values. I see no reason why it has to be ignored or retconned away just to make the same mistake. I'd rather work with the material rather than just waving things away with my magic pen because I disagree with it.

I like to think that Janice Lester was delusional. She couldn't get her own command because she just wasn't fit for those duties, but she didn't want to accept that and blamed it on sexism that wasn't really there. It wouldn't be the first time someone tried to place blame on institutions to excuse their own incompetence.

It doesn't make much sense for women in Starfleet (such as Number One) to be able to advance all the way to first officer (and therefore taking command in many situations), but then there's some kind of glass ceiling that prevents them from having their own ship.

And this is a hundred years after Erika Hernandez commanded USS Columbia (yes, I went there), and fifteen years or so before the unnamed captain of USS Saratoga in STIV:TVH.

Not the stupid argument AGAIN.

Yeah, I'd really rather this thread didn't collapse into a "female captains in Starfleet" argument. There's a lot more relevant material to discuss about the Captain Pike film.

Captain Pike didn't seem like the "combat" type, to be honest.

PIKE: All I wanted for that moment was to get my hands around your neck.

PIKE: I'm filling my mind with a picture of beating their huge, misshapen heads to pulp.

PIKE: I'll break out of this zoo somehow and get to you. Is your blood red like ours? I'm going to find out.

PIKE: All I want to do is get my hands on you. Can you read these thoughts? Images of hate, killing?

PIKE: Now you hold still, or I'll break your neck.

PIKE: You stop this illusion, or I'll twist your head off. (it stops) All right, now you try one more illusion, you try anything at all, and I'll break your neck.

PIKE: I'm willing to bet you've created an illusion this laser is empty. I think it just blasted a hole in that window and you're keep us from seeing it. You want me to test my theory out on your head?

Yeah, I get no indications that Pike seemed the "combat type." :wtf:

I would like to see them bring out the Laser Cannon again, that was pretty cool. I wish they had used that in TOS instead of firing phasers from orbit.

My guess is the laser cannon is what was actually used on the ship, just unbolted from its mounts and taken down to the planet. Maybe the one they used was a "spare."

Why not blast it from orbit? Probably more effective from 20 feet away instead of hundreds of miles.

I feel that most of that was a specific strategy to beat them once he knew their weakness (and being in a threatening and high-stress situation). Just because he's capable of something doesn't mean that's his nature.

When he's in his quarters talking with the doctor, it's pretty clear he wants nothing to do with battles and men dying under his command.

That's not a proper reading of Pike at all. We've only seen one example of the character and at the beginning of the story he sounds dedeated. For all we know Pike has seen quite a bit of death and he's fed up at that point.

He commands a top-of-the-line starship. And when the character was conceived he was the prototype for what would eventually become Kirk. So GR's intentions would be that Pike was quite capable and ready to deal with combat when called upon.

Never thought I'd say this, but I'm bored of all this stuff taking place in the TOS timeframe. I want Kirk and Spock stories, but I want the universe to be reimagined around how we see the future now, not fifty years ago.

I see that space.com has put out an article about this project. I hope it helps them gain some traction.

The publicity from space.com only helped a little. It's a pity because I'd like to see this get done.

Do you mean just as a fan film or as a TV series? If you mean fan film, I'm sure there will probably be enough people to pony up the cash to make it happen. If you mean TV series, that will never happen. It's not even in the realm of possibility.

I have no interest in these kinds of fan productions and find them all just a little tacky and embarrassing to be honest. Additionally, it just makes me feel sorry for the actors when they're reduced to this sort of work. Are times really that bad for them?
