"Star Trek Begins" - The 'Origins' Film Discussion

According to the Trades, it looks like the Star Trek origins film will be the first to lens (Q4 this year supposedly).

When should it take place? What would you like to see in it?

IMO this film is Paramount's best bet to build a new mass audience for Star Trek. The approach of going back to the basics worked well for Star Trek 2009, before they fumbled that franchise.

Personally, I'd want this film to happen during the Romulan War leading into the birth of the Federation.

There's been some successful grounded war epics lately, from Oppenheimer to Masters of Air on Apple:

Add a young, sexy cast. Perhaps Tiberius Kirk in his 20s as a MACO in the war, as your lead. And you may have some general audience appeal.

The Romulan war is a great entry point. You have very submarine-esque Starships. Nuclear weapons. Only a few alien races in play. It could be quite grounded for those who are new to Trek.

Nobody other than the people that post here give a flying fuck about the Romulan War. That’s not how you get casual moviegoers’ asses in theater seats.

And as for the movie itself? I’ll believe it when I see an actual trailer for it. Barring that, it’s just Paramount crying the proverbial wolf again.

Trek is one of those franchises that doesn't tend to build 'a new mass audience'. Once in a while they manage to get non-Trekkies to come along en masse, but the majority lose interest after a while. (IMO, as ever.)

Then instead of spending 150 million dollars on a Romulan War theatrical movie, they should spend 10 million dollars on a made-for-P+ Romulan War movie, and give up making theatrical films altogether.

Honestly, a theatrical film about ‘the origin of Star Trek’ isn’t making me see a lot of dollar signs in the revenue department. But what do I know? I’m not a movie producer, I’m just some schmuck on a Star Trek bulletin board posting his opinion.

No one wants to see the Romulan War more than me, but I certainly don't think it will move the needle and gain more fans to the franchise.

Like Dukhat said, nobody but the people who post here (Trekkies) give a flying fuck about the Romulan War.

The single biggest thing in the last 30 years that helped the fandom to actually grow, was Star Trek 2009. If you want to gain the attention of the general audience, that's your way to do it.

200 years in to our future.

Earth is planning in joining a confederation of planets, with multiple envoys visiting Earth, Mara, and the first station orbiting Jupiter. The SVN-01 is embarking out for its demonstration of support to the confederation. As they head out, unknown ships attack them. Able to fight them off, Captain Chin warps to the rendezvous only to find an attack on Vulcan.

The attackers retreat, and evidence points to hostile from Earth, despite different technology. Chin requests support, and receives a mix of Vulcan, Tellarite and a Andorian liason officer who will report. With tensions rising at the negotiating table, Chin and crew hunt for answers.

The enemy is revealed to be former foes of Vulcan, the Tholians, who had attempted to conquer Vulcan and mine the ores beneath. With humans helping their enemies, Vulcans are not likely to admit Earth.

Like Dukhat said, nobody but the people who post here (Trekkies) give a flying fuck about the Romulan War.
Yup. Please no Romulan war.

A YouTube figure many people here hate with a passion has heavily implied he's seen a Romulan War script. The Inglorious Treksperts also keep mentioning a Romulan War script.

What Paramount should really do is put the current Mission Impossible team on it. Pull out Erik Jendresen's 2005 Romulan War script and have Christopher McQuarrie direct it.

Screenrant is just a clickbait site.

Screen Rant is part of the same overarching network that I'm employed with; while I get where you're coming from, these articles, which are categorized as "explainers" within our software suite, are simply designed to be informative (and, ideally, engaging). There's nothing on the other side of that link but a writer who pitched "I want to explain the Earth-Romulan War from Star Trek" to the editing team and got the go-ahead for it.

Fair enough

I really, really, really don’t want a so-called Star Trek origin story to be a war movie.

But I’m also at a loss as to what a Star Trek origin story would be.
Star Trek Begins
? We got that in First Contact.
The Federation Begins? We got that in Enterprise.
Kirk (Etc.) Begins? We got (a version of) that in Star Trek ‘09.

What’s left? Maybe Earth Unites, but a movie without starships won’t much feel like Star Trek, and anyway it’s the sort of thing only deep-cut fans would care about.

Maaaaybe a Starfleet Begins movie, just reveling in building and launching the Federation’s grand star navy for the first time, and conflicting over what it’ll be about? Starting the “military or not?” thing, in-universe?
