Star Trek at SDCC 2016

MacQuarrie's designs for TMP, which I said I would love to see:

And the Discovery, complete with asteroid dock:

I have no problem with it - it could be very pleasing - except I really wish the nacelles were higher on their struts.

They seem very dominant; like two giant highlighter pens. I can learn to love it though.

I would also like to note that USS Discovery's NCC-1031 seems higher in registry than the USS Kelvin's NCC-0514, so it could be in the Kelvin Timeline, perhaps coming after the split.

My guess is that it's set pre-TOS to avoid the whole timeline nonsense.

The registry only tells you it was built after the Kelvin, not whether Nero has shown up yet. ;)

That is one ugly design. I hated it the first time I saw the design in the 70's. And while ti looks a little better with refined detail it is still extremely ugly.

Outside of some of bad kit bashes I am trying to think of an uglier design that actually got produced. Of course it is still early so some changes might occur. But Damn.

Now of course that has absolutely no impact on character and stories told. But I am going to have a really hard time getting an emotional attachment to this design.

I think my base line thought is going to be please, hurry up and let it get destroyed, which I assume is not the reaction that is intended.

There is a cool unintentional side consequence of the new design being a Ralph MacQuarrie inspired ship - it explains some of the unknown ships seen in the background at Qualor II, and other places, as they may be ships of this era or even of this class:

The presence of the Planet of the Titans study model in spacedock for example, might be an old starfleet ship from this era. The study model which was seen at Qualor II, and even ships lost as Wolf 359 might finally have an explanation.

So far the only thing I'm liking is the suggestion it's Prime Universe... and I bet that's a total misdirection. No doubt the ship is 23rd Century, but the show could take place any place some weird space anomaly takes it. Christ. I'm even starting to sound like Brannon Braga with this shit.

I'm sorry but the CG ship is just as ugly looking as the series title logo. Discovery even sounds like a randomly generated name for a Trek spin-off set in the 24th Century. Maybe I'm having a really vivid nightmare and my beloved show isn't coming back to TV looking like just another fan-film.

Always wanted to see Ralph McQuarrie's design in action..I think it'll grow on me..after all, it isn't as lazy a concept as the "Akiraprise" from ENT. (and I remember the internet nerd-rage from that one too)

If they're going with the McQuarrie design, could the series be set in the pastel uniform era? There's a 10+ year gap between TMP and TWOK that's one of the least explored holes in the timeline.

Here's the thing: if this new show is pre-TOS, that means that the USS Discovery may take place in both the Prime Timeline and the Kevin Timeline, but the focus of the show will be the Prime Timeline moving forward. The ONLY way to know is if there is a throwaway line from one of the characters, mentioning the USS Kelvin in some way...
