So... I bought a pan flute.

Okay, so-- ever since I was a little kid I've always loved the sound of a pan flute. It's such an earthy sound... and I had heard it played in Karate Kid and Courage Mountain, and found it to be the favorite instrument on my keyboard. It wasn't until recently, I made a very random purchase of a tenor pan flute about a month ago:

Of course this raised some eyebrows among my friends and family (more of a typical Danny kind of response). Supportive, but one of my closest friends assured me it would soon be an expensive dust collector.

I was suprised to find when I first tried playing it, I got little more than a hollow air sound and playing "accidentials" was damn near impossible. I had never played a wind instrument really, so I expect this to be like blowing into a beer bottle. Even so, I've been practicing quite a bit and through some books and tutorials started to get some sound of the thing. I can read music so that has been helpful.

I finally made a recording the other day! http://tinyurl.com/369k2pl

It's a song from Waking Ned Devine. Anyway, it's been a blast to play and nice little hobby in general. Also, the guy I bought it from is a talented gent from Hawaii who offers a lot of general support.

Random? Yes. But freaking fun! Family enjoyed it when I starting playing some Irish bits at one of our many parties back home.

That sounds so cool! Good job, Danoz.

I've never tried the pan flute. I play the tenor recorder, and it's fun. Obscure instrumentalists, unite!

Very cool! I play the Irish/tin/penny whistle myself, which I have the feeling is much easier than your pan flute. Nice tone & vibrato, man. :techman:

I have a weirdly fretted "mountain dulcimer" that should fit the ensemble nicely.

This is AWESOME. We should so start a club on TrekBBS. Anybody have an Ocarana or Gemshorn?

And the irish whistle is AWESOME. I want one. First assignment, play and record the song from The Inner Light :D.

I've played it on the soprano recorder. I didn't have proper sheet music, so I was playing by ear. I didn't record it, though.

Edit: I play oboe music on my tenor recorder since there isn't a lot of tenor recorder music out there. I've been meaning to learn that piece Harry Kim played in The Void.

LOL - that was one of the first things I taught myself to play. ;)

I also play an instrument called a bowed psaltery.

It's very simple to play. The strings on the right correspond to the white keys on a piano, and the strings on the left to the black keys. The only thing I find counter-intuitive is that as you move up the instrument, the notes get lower. Which of course, makes logical sense, as the strings get longer in that direction, but I still think of "away" as "up", i.e. "higher" and have to concentrate when picking out melodies. ;)

I could bring my mandolin into the mix.

When I was a kid I had a wooden flute, and, naturally, I taught myself to play Picard's song from "Inner Light."

I have a bamboo flute, a Clarke pennywhistle, a pan flute, an ocarina, plus a bunch of those small bamboo flutes that you get at powwows for like a buck a piece.

I've been using Facebook for so long my instict was to "like" this.... we'll just do this :techman:

Very nice, and I like the MP3. I have a pan flute from Thailand-- a friend of mine got it for me on one of her trips home-- but of course I can't play it. I'm not very musically inclined. Love the sound, though. Mellow and haunting. Reminds me of the stuff Caine used to play on Kung Fu.

I highly approve of that. You are hereby awarded the Italian honorary musical citizenship. :techman:

Same here. :D

I studied flute in middle school as part of the mandatory musical education, and I rather enjoyed it. I've always had a good ear for music, but unfortunately my dexterity is limited unless I practice like mad every day. At college I picked up an old folk guitar and taught myself some tunes, but I never went beyond that.

Dear Lord...this thread has the makings of a hippie jam band festival written all over it!
