Sleeping Arrangements

So on the California-Class, lower deck ensigns are assigned bunks that like the bulkheads of corridors. Has anyone wondered how bad the accommodation must be for the ships petty officers and crewmen? Are their beds inside the nacelles?:lol::lol:

Mariner was promoted out of pure spite as a way for her mother (Freeman) to teach her a lesson and she got assigned rather nice quarters.
So, no. There don't seem to be any beds in the nacelles.

The fact that Cali class ships have bunk beds in corridors is a bit strange to say the least... however, I can see why SF might do that on that class of ships.
But if you ask me, an easier (and decent) thing to do would be to just assign a cargobay sized room (or two) to serve as lower decks crew quarters by having those bunks/pods arranged in a fashion like some modern pod hotels do (you can actually pack a reasonably high amount of them like that)... and in turn, the larger cargo bay area could also serve as a communal area for the lower decks to congregate with each other in their off time (in addition to other areas of the ship which is used by the crew).

Sort of like student dormitories really... the pods are there for sleeping, but once you're out of them, you're greeted by a nice area with sofas, tables, etc. for relaxation, reading, replicators (maybe even holo pods) etc. .. you know make it NICE.

I really don't understand the idea behind shoving crews into literal walls of the ship and not giving them space to use for each other.
Its the 24th century for crying out loud.

They probably just have racks of bunks like we saw in ST VI. No privacy, communal restrooms and replicators, dozens or even hundreds of crewmen bunked in a single area.

At least the Cerritos ensigns still have their own private rooms, small as those rooms may be. They have some measure of privacy. Kind of like Capsule hotels.

It can only be deliberate, to make ranking up more desirable.

Look at Strange New Worlds, Uhura sleeps in a room but it's shared and she has a Lower Decks-style bunk in the wall. And we know from "Q&A" that the Enterprise has those massive spaces between decks they could build apartment blocks in if they so desired:lol:

I imagine it could be something like how the novels depicted the first ship Kirk served on as an Ensign, which just stuck beds wherever they could fit them, with Kirk himself sleeping in the engine room right next to the warp core.

So yeah, with Cerritos Ensigns sleeping in the corridor, maybe the enlisted are sleeping in actual work areas on the ship. And worse, they could be "hot bunking." Basically two people share the same bed, one sleeps in it while the other is on duty.

Hmm, thinking the matter over, my rough summary of enlisted/NCO sleeping arrangements on the Cerritos. They all sleep in bunks set up in work areas around the ship.
Crewmen "hot bunk."
Petty Officers actually do get their very own beds.
Chiefs get their very own corridor.
The highest ranking NCO on the Cerritos sleeps in a shuttlecraft.

...does anyone else now want to see VOY redone with Eternal Ensign Kim sleeping in a hallway bunk while everyone else has their own quarters...at least until Paris is demoted, at which point he and Kim become bunkmates...but then he's re-promoted and it's, "Adios Harry!"

I think they need the Triple Bunk Bed setup =D

Or have a Dorm Room setup with shared common areas

It's weird that the beds and replicator restrictions drive people mad.

:)
One would imagine that in an evolved 24th century humanity, where they have evolved past hunger, want and the need for material possession that there is a certain level of self-control with what is presented, i.e. each aspect of Starfleet and Federation culture is to be content at each level.

That would have made it problematic for Tom to crash on Harry's couch whenever B'Elanna kicked him out. Canonically, Harry had his own quarters.

If you can redo Voyager to further humiliate Harry, then maybe I'll just redo it so that sometime during a third season staff meeting, Janeway summons Harry to the front of the room. And then she says: "Harry Kim, as captain of this ship, I promote you to the rank of lieutenant, with all privileges and responsibilities therein." :nyah:

It does seem odd Harry had his own quarters. In TNG, it was stated on the Enterprise D you had to make Lieutenant before you got your own quarters. If Ensigns had to share quarters on a Galaxy class ship, it really seems odd they got their own room on a smaller Intrepid class.

It's possible that Harry didn't initially have his own quarters but that after "Caretaker" a number of previously-occupied quarters became available. This is an even easier tweak since that was also his first mission on Voyager.

Though it's also possible that as senior staff (coughs) Harry got the privilege of his own quarters despite his rank.

Possibly Harry got his own quarters because he was senior staff. Or, maybe because Voyager had fewer crew, all officers could. Given that Voyager was actually designed for lengthy deep space missions, maybe they went to greater lengths to ensure crew comfort. By comparison, the Cerritos was the Starfleet equivalent of a third-rate vessel at best and probably rotated crew regularly, so her crew wouldn't need plush digs.
