SimCity Games?

Are there any new SimCity games on the market these days? The last one I bought was SimCity 4. I realize there's many different types of Sim games nowadays, but I don't think I've seen anything new for SimCity itself. Those games were fun... building cities then destroying them... heehee

Yeah, I saw that link after I posted this. Actually, I haven't played in years either and my niece was over and I remember she used to like to play those games, and I installed my old SimCity 4 game, but I've never really seen anything sold after that. I don't think I'm too much of a fan of those "Sims" games. Give me SimCity anyday :)

I've recently been playing Cities XL, which is pretty good. It was on sale on Steam, don't know if it still is.

SimCity appears to have died the moment that EA realised they could make more money by forcing Maxis to churn out endless The Sims games. :( There was SimCity Societies, but that wasn't a proper SimCity game and wasn't well received.

There have been a couple of pretenders to the throne, such as Cities XL, but nothing has yet been able to beat the proper SimCity games. I still play SimCity 4 from time to time but it's a bit finicky on Windows 7 x64.

I'm honestly amazed that there hasn't been a proper SimCity game come out. The deluxe edition of SC4 still tends to pop up on the top 20 bestsellers list of PC games during quiet sales months, and there's still a massively active fan community. It's mind-boggling that no one at EA has seen that there's a market for another well-made, semi-realistic city builder\simulator. It's really a shame... SC2K was one of the first games I ever owned.

On the plus side, it is at least possible to keep SC4 pretty fresh thanks to the aforementioned fan community. If you're playing without the Network Addon Mod, you're doing it wrong, if you ask me. ;)

Honestly, though, what some people are able to wrangle out of that game borders on art. I've seen cities that are barely recognizable as being made in SC4...

Other examples:

Bridges over roads (not in the game engine) and seawalls

Realistically scaled airports

European-style wall-to-wall buildings

Dammit.

*goes to reinstall Sim City 4 and say goodbye to free time*

Is it just me or is Cities XL *always* on sale over at Steam?

The first SimCity game I played was a direct port to the BBC Micro of all places - it was one of the last great games made for that little computer. I have then played every SimCity game for the PC except Societies, the latter of which to me seemed like a step backwards from what I had heard.

SimCity 3000 holds a special place in my heart, especially as it was the first SimCity game that I was really good at, plus for me it had the best music of the series. (I hear that the soundtrack for it can still be downloaded from the official SimCity site.)

I have SimCity 4, but am now interested in trying this network mod add-on mentioned above. Some of the features (like roundabouts!) look sweet.

I also still like SimCity 2000, if only for this guy:

Perfect thread bomb material, right there...

My first attempt at SimCity came when my brother bought a pack containing SimCity 2000, Settlers 2 and Civilization 2, and having heard so much about SimCity I expected to play it a lot. However, I was really disappointed when I laid out my zones and all I got was coloured squares and couldn't figure out why nothing was being built. In the end I became a Civ junkie and didn't bother with SimCity any more.

Years later I saw SimCity 3000 on sale so I decided to give it a chance. That's how I learned about the "play" button. :alienblush:

Ah.. Sim City.. the black hole of free time.

I can't remember any game that takes up so much time and you don't even realize it.. i love these games.

Sadly i always reach my ceiling somewhere after a few hours when my city reaches a certain size and transportation/clogged up streets become a problem.
For the life of me i can't figure out the subway system or establish working bus routes :(

My first time playing SC2K was similar, only I sat there wondering why my city had no power, despite all the power lines I'd put down.

Then I discovered the drop-down menu with power plants underneath power lines... :o

If you're talking SC4, it's actually pretty easy to get nearly half your citizens riding the bus or subways. The first thing I recommend is to download a mod that lets you build on-street bus and subway stops. They make it much easier to build a transit system, and are a little more realistic, to boot. Oh, and if you don't have the NAM, you should probably get that, too, as it makes the game simulate transportation much more realistically.

With that done, all you really need to do is remember that Sims are lazy bastards and don't like to walk. In fact, if they have to walk any more than ten squares during their commute, they'll drive instead, regardless of how congested your roads are. So the solution is to blanket your city with stops, usually one every block or so will do the trick. With your subways, you'll want to put them under major roads, converging on your downtown (I usually don't do subways to industrial zones; Sims don't like to ride them there). Always make sure that your subways are joined to bus stops (some mods for on-street give you the option to have combined stations, too). That way, Sims won't have to walk straight to work from the subway station, and can instead take the bus part way to their destination. It's not perfect, but I've used this basic method to get my mass transit numbers to dominate over car transit:

Those are from one of the best cities I ever made, which sadly I lost when my registry got corrupted last year. :(

You can also get creative with mass transit, too, if you're bored. I spent way too much time fiddling around building grade-separated bus rapid transit once:

I managed to make pretty much the most perfect city in Sim City 2000. It was all flat, except for a large slope that was covered in water and led to a small river. The waterfall was covered in hydroelectric dams that generated enough power to embarrass Oppenheimer. Then I built a grid of subways, discovering that zones within 5 squares of transportation flourished. The entire city was connected via subway and thus became Coruscant: One big never-ending city, broken up only by police departments and hospitals, with a massive airport off in a corner.

The citizens complained about the lack of roads, but the amount of complaint percentage never reached above .5%, so it wasn't a real issue. The newspaper just had to complain about something equal to nothing.

Then I ran out of space to build on and there was no reason to continue. The true price of utopia is boredom.

Haven't played SC in ages.. Used to waste an amazing amount of time on it.. I always had water problems.. No matter how many pumping stations, water towers or desalinization plants I built, it was always back and forth..

I bought Simcopter when it came out and it had its charms, but really, the graphics were pretty horrible, even for that time...

SC2K was awesome.

SC4 with the Rush Hour expansion pack (and maybe some thrid-party tweaks) is damn-near perfect. I mean, really. They can just take Sim City 4: Rush Hour and remake it with modern graphics an UI and I'll be happy.

But EA has its head up its ass and I've no fucking clue what they were thinking on that abomination that is Sim City: Societies.

Same. A nice 3D engine (and no damn grid! :scream:) would be awesome.

How would they make a SimCity without a grid.

I have an old computer that SC4 won't run on, but I love SC3, they are all great in their own ways.

I don't think it would be too tough with today's tech. Cities XL doesn't have a grid, after all, and I don't believe SC:S does either. All I ask is the ability to curve roads, build on a diagonal, etc.
