Seven of Nine... Missed opportunity?

BJ Wagner

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Let me start by saying that I’ve never been a fan of Voyager. I was excited by the concept, but not the execution. I wish it was a much more serious look at survival in a harsh expanse of space with little hope of rescue and the need to conserve supplies. However, I’ll never fault or criticize those who love the show and its characters. For me, Seven of Nine was the personification of the show, an interesting concept spoiled by creative decisions made for the sake of ratings and pandering to the lowest common denominator. Now, could this character have been handled differently if ratings were not a concern?

The way I see it, having a character that is freed from the Borg influence could have proven to be a dramatic journey though emotional and physical tragedy. Imagine having your mind and body essentially raped by a bio-mechanical race? Imagine being freed of as much of their invasive technology as possible, but retaining some or all of your memories of years of assimilation? Would your first thought to be to dress a skin-tight cat-suit? Probably not.

Why not have Seven portrayed as person deeply affected by this invasive event? What if she proved herself to be a highly intelligent and important member of the crew, but one who avoids all physical contact? I would have liked to see her start out emotionally distant, hidden behind layers of clothes and a fleeting gaze—uncomfortable to make even eye contact. Over the course of a season or two, she would form important friendships with certain characters and slowly open up, shedding layers of clothing as if lowering her defenses. Eventually she’d feel confident enough to make physical contact with a select few of people such as a friendly pat on the back or even going as far as to hold hands. Perhaps, several seasons later, even falling in love with one of her shipmates?

I think there’s so much dramatic value that could be mined by such a character. If this show was re-imagined in today’s TV world of more mature themes then those of the mid 90’s, would this portrayal be interesting? What do you think?

Yes, it would, I think. That extents not just to Seven but the relationships, issues, challenges etc of all characters. Just imagine being on a ship for seven years (or three years with no end in sight) - I would have gotten cabinet fever much before then. There would be more psychological issues, not just Harry pining for his mom. There would have been people who hated each other in a way that it couldn't be patched over by Janeway ordering them to get along. And there would have been more romance, love, conflict, jealousy (ok, just mentioning J/C here not elaborating :))
But now as then that would have made it less appealing to the core target audience of young males and less sci-fi and therefore I think, though it would be different now than back then, it probably still wouldn't show those dynamics, at least not with the same target audience.

Seven's narrative was basically the same as that as Tarzan, the Ape Man. Removed from family at a tender age and raised in an unHuman environment through their formative years and into adulthood. Human Beings treasure their childhood and prize their individuality. The former's lost to her, forever. The latter is hers to define. Despite all that the Borg wrongfully, forcefully took from her, they gave her an extraordinary experience that we, the viewing audience, cannot fully comprehend.

Hell ... I can't even imagine someone's thoughts entering my own, in a MindMeld, much less a billion people's thoughts, all at the same time. Whilst I see Seven being haunted and affected by this childhood trauma, it wasn't a Lifetime of Abuse. She was traumatised by having her Humanity forcefully removed, yes. But see ... that's just it. It was removed. And in its place was - not a new philosophy - but revised perception. Like Geordi's VISOR sees, but not in a Human way. Imagine that kind of change with every input of the senses. That's how I see Seven.

She's not so far from her Humanity that she can't understand what she's after, but she can't think of it in the same way as us. Even taken from the Jungle, the iris that Tarzan perceives the world through remains that of the morals belonging to the Apes that raised him. Tarzan's Humanity gets to develop to take on a larger role in his Life, but all of his perceptions first must go through what the Apes gave him. That's what it must be like for Seven. So ... I'm not sure I buy the, "oh, well she's Human, now, so she's a miserable cow because of her Borg treatment." I have to disagree, on that.

First... the clothing. Whether we agree with the premise or not, the EMH initially claimed the skin tight silver suit was helping her to heal from all the BORG implants he removed from her skin.

Second, she did prove herself to be a highly intelligent and important member of the crew (if not always cooperative) and while she didn't avoid physical contact like the plague, neither did she seek it out. She wasn't always aware of her own emotions enough to feel uncomfortable with making eye contact, but its obvious that the emotional distance was there. Just look at how restrained touchy feely Janeway was with Seven.

Janeway may gave grabbed and dragged a frightened Seven while in the brig during the 2nd ep of season 4, but when was the next time she touched her? Maybe the season 4 finale, Hope & Fear? Janeway even commented during the modification of Seven's cortical implants that they were back where they started 9 months before... in a brig.

Even the shipper vids are often notable for how close Janeway & Seven come... without touching.

As the seasons progress, Janeway does start to tap an arm, encircle a shoulder, but its still rare. And Seven does start to make enroads with other crew, from Naomi to Neelix to even B'Elanna.

I prefer to forget the Seven / Chakotay development, but alas its canon so we can't and it does fulfill your desire to have her fall in love "eventually".

I loved Seven, and am quite happy how they integrated her character into the show,

I've always understood that Jeri Ryan was initially brought in to be T&A to appeal to the power of boner and save a dying show. Hence, the catsuit and heels. Only after seeing her act, did the PTB realize Ryan could actually act and that allowed the scriptwriters the opportunity to develop her character.

I'm sorry, but I'll never buy any excuse for the tight clothing. Did the high heels help with her arches, too? Thank you for the other information. I didn't mean to imply at the character as portrayed in the show wasn't a valuable one, just that I wish she had been portrayed differently.

Yes, Seven and T'Pol... The very pinnicle of Star Trek's idea of strong, capable woman. :( I hope Discovery goes a different route.

BJ most of the lifers in this particular subforum are women.

It's all hero worship, and "yay" feminism.

Your ire is really unnecessary.
