News Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville

Nah - it's McFarlane. It'll run forever.

So, it's on FOX's fall schedule:

It's been described as a comedy-drama, though FOX's announcement simply calls it a drama (however unlikely that is):

The Orville is a live-action, one-hour series set 400 years in the future that follows the adventures of The Orville, a mid-level exploratory spaceship, as its crew, both human and alien, face the wonders and dangers of outer space, while also dealing with the familiar, often humorous problems of everyday life.
Sounds like all kinds of fun.

The set photo looks nice and the additions of Scott Grimes and Penny Johnson, along with Adrianne Palicki, are enough to push me to give the show a chance despite my distaste for Seth McFarlane.

I'd like to see footage first before I pass judgment, but that pic does not sell me. (Mainly its McFarlane. Can't stand the guy's acting or writing. Heck of a singer though!)

Here are some more promotional images from the show, including the logo, sets, a shuttle, shots of part of the ship, and future New York. The government is called the "Planetary Union". Brian George and Victor Garber will be appearing.

I'm getting a very Galaxy Quest vibe from this (which is a good thing), like if the show within the movie was made without the present day, real world parts. Family Guy has long since grown tired after all these years, but I'm a fan of McFarland's films and his love of science and scifi is well known, as can be seen with his excellent production of Cosmos. I'm looking forward to this.

I'm liking what I'm seeing here. While I have my issues with Family Guy, I've really enjoyed McFalane's other stuff I've seen, and he's a big sci-fi fan, so hopefully he should have a good handle on those aspects of the shows.

It'd be funny if this ends up being more "Star Trek" than Discovery.

I don't see anywhere they actually describe it as a drama.

I know everyone hates Family Guy and Seth MacFarlane, but the guy is hilarious to me and I enjoy everything he does. From the description of the series, it kind of sounds like Star Trek meets Archer in space with all the inter-office arguing and interactions. I like the costume design. And, I know I used to make fun of Berman and Braga in my fanfic years and years ago, but I like the idea that Braga (along with David A. Goodman) are executive producers, so they can poke fun at the trappings and cliches of sci fi shows.

MacFarlane is very hit or miss these days, with an emphasis on miss, but after seeing that cast photo, I find myself much more interested in this show. At the very least, it looks like it could be a fun Star Trek pastiche.

BTW, any speculation on how the uniform colours work? At a guess, blue is obviously command, and red is security. Green, I'm guessing is science/medical, as for orange, any guesses? Engineering, probably.
