Series 11 News & Spoilers

I think we can safely say, at this point, that anything other than the version of Doctor Who you have in your head is NOT going to result in a positive post.

You mean the Doctor Who that existed from 1963 until 2017 (with a few breaks, obviously)? The actual show? The one with the alien who traveled around saving time by doing things, and not just spending 45 minutes every week shitting out self righteous speeches about how doing literally nothing makes said alien the bestest person ever (I mean, the Doctor did that a few times over the years, but not every damn adventure for a whole series)? Yeah, anything not related to the actual show that was called Doctor Who will probably not be a positive post. Start a private reddit or facebook group or something if you only want people who parrot your opinions to post about a subject.

Anyone who just wants "positive posts" doesn't understand what a discussion is, or what a public forum is for that matter.

Likewise, anyone who continually bitches about a show that is clearly no longer for them doesn't understand what a remote control is for, or DVDs for that matter.

This whole canard “you just want positive comments” is getting old. Is there a new schtick you can try?

Look... is it the best season of NuWho? Oh God, no! Is it one of its weakest? Well... is certainly up against the sixth, seventh and eighth series... but all of those had far, far better episodes to distinguish them than anything in here, I'm afraid. So, yeah.

But. I certainly won't pout and pretend this isn't Doctor Who. Of course it is. Its just as much Doctor Who as anything that bore the name has been thus far. I just want it to be improved next series, and to be broadcast within 2019. That's all.

I'm in the process of doing a total rewatch of the new series. I'm currently up to series 8 (just finished Robots of Sherwood). And I have to say that I really started to struggle part way through series six and series seven dragged out forever. Then I got to series eight - Deep Breath almost ended my rewatch. It took me about three goes over about a month to finish that episode. Into the Dalek just bored me. Robots of Sherwood was fun and I'm hoping the next few episodes are as enjoyable as I remember them being - but then I've got to get through Kill the Moon and In the Forest of the Night again. It's hard to make a judgement until I get up to series 11 for a rewatch, but I don't believe anything in that series will make me question my will to live, as have some of the episodes I've rewatched in the past few months.

I enjoy watching Peter Capaldi (there isn't a single Doctor I dislike) but he had the misfortune of being cast as Stephen Moffett was really starting to struggle with burnout. I wonder if he'd have coped better if there had been more breaks in the show while he was showrunner. Instead of trying to get out a series every single year, maybe a series every 18 months might have improved the quality?

They've been producing the books for 14 years and I can't think of too many that are as much loved as some of the Virgin New Adventures or Eighth Doctor Adventures. So I'm not too worried about the books supplanting the love for the series. And the books being very good can only mean good things. (Hell, I've owned a copy of Gallifrey Chronicles since before I technically knew what Doctor Who was.)

There have been a few animated stories under 10 but it seems like they were never that well received.

Curious...which Gallifrey Chronicles?

IMO, Panini's DWM comics did a better job with their stories for Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi's Doctors than the show did.

Any highlights? I gave up DWM a looong time ago, but have fond memories of the seventh and eight Doctor strips.

Curious idea but what if people end up liking the novels better than the show or at least the most recent season of the show? Also this made me think of another question. Should or will they ever do a "Doctor Who" cartoon? I mean Trek has done it before and is soon to do it again. Seems like a great idea to explore some of the weird stuff in the Who universe.

Jason

I currently still like the novels better than the show. Probably why I liked the Smith era so much....it leant into some concepts from the EDAs.

Not really sure, there. Honestly, series 7 would've been a lot better if Clara was introduced as a companion sooner, and the Ponds had left during the end of series 6. Also, lets not forget Matt Smith left the show sooner than Moffat had intended, and series 8 had to shoehorn whatever left of his series 8 concept for Capaldi and retool it around him.

It does improve with series 9, though, at least for me. 9 and 10 are pretty good series, by my estimation.

Lots. In particular in Smith's run is Hunters of the Burning Stone which teams the Eleventh Doctor with Ian and Barbara. Capaldi's run has the Twelfth Doctor restricted to 1970s Earth for a multi story arc, which eventually includes the Delgado Master.

Interesting. Hopefully they will do the usual collections.

I remember thinking they were an improvement when I first watched them. But so far I've pretty much enjoyed every series as it originally aired. It's only on the rewatch that I'm really noticing the flaws.
I've enjoyed both more on rewatch, if I'm being honest. But Hell Bent NEVER improves, I'm afraid.
