S2/15 Spoiler Round-Up (Lot's of Spoilers Obviously)

So with the season over and no more shooting until next February at the earliest I thought I'd bring together everything we know about next season in one place. I've stuck with things that were actually seen being shot and avoided speculation (mostly.)

Unlike S1/14 where we knew something about every episode, even if it was just "There's a lot of babies on a space station", they've managed to keep multiple episodes completely secret this time. Even so there's some big spoilers in there, so time to bail out or buckle up.

Christmas Special: The return of the "guest Companion" played this time by woman of the moment Nicola Coughlan. Has scenes set in the present and WW2 both in London and New York. Timothy West also appears as a military officer.

Episode 01: Introduces the new Companion, Belinda, played by Varada Sethu. Features a big robot that wouldn't look out of place in Power Rangers. Was shot simultaneously with Episode 4, and is set in the present, so Ruby and the UNIT characters might be in this one.

Episode 02: Set in Florida in the 1950s. Ruby's not in this one but Mr Flood is, looking the same as she does now. There was also an actor spotted wearing the same outfit that Tecteun was when she met the child Doctor, though it was not the same person. One scene involves the name of of film being blown of a cinema marquee with the letters that remain spelling HARBINGER, which obviously means a lot more now than it did when it was seen back in February.

Episode 03: Nothing!

Episode 04: Ruby heavy, Doctor lite. UNIT returns including Shirley. Introduces Ruby's boyfriend. Features a group of Alien Truthers protesting not just outside UNIT HQ but outside Ruby's house as well. Has a scene where UNIT arrest someone in a fake alien costume. (Rumoured to be a 'False Flag' operation by UNIT to discredit the Truthers.)

And here's a clip from it!

Episodes 05 & 06: Nothing, and nothing!

Episodes 07 & 08: Set in an alternate present where the UK is a fascist state with heavy 1984 influences. Everyone is playing a different version of themselves; the Doctor is a businessman called Mr. Smith, Shirley is homeless (as are apparently all people with disabilities) and Ruby's boyfriend is propaganda figure for the State.

The one exception is Ruby who is seen at one point being dismissed as crazy by the Doctor and Mel when she tries to talk to them. And what's really interesting is that she's wearing the same clothes she has on in Episode 04. Now while it's normal for you and I to wear the same thing more than once, not so much for characters on TV. So it's possible that something happens at the end of that episode that sends her a short way into the future skipping the moment things change.

And that's it. I was going to say we might get a return of Rogue in one of the unknown episodes but Jonathan Groff has been on Broadway for almost all of the the time S2 was shooting.

Except the Doctor and Ruby do that in their last scene in Empire of Death.

They — and only they, not Mel — even find time and space to change costumes to quasi-military fatigues between scenes in the memory Tardis for no apparent reason. I suspect the real arc is to do with H&M catalogues.

I think we can guess who's PM in that future.

In other news, if you like RTD's work on Doctor Who and you haven't watched Years and Years, what are you waiting for? I'll be rewatching that before I rewatch this latest season of Doctor Who. More than once, possibly.

BBC trailer for Years and Years

Take with a massive pinch of salt but it's being claimed the disney leak says Season 2 is out 28th March 2025.

Well, some of the set dressing for Episode 8 did have the events taking place in May.

It's also seen as a low cost investment for them, which isn't a shock* and good news for their continued involvement.

*I couldn't point to any episode and say, "That looks massively better than 'Flux' or POTD. "

I am curious, they say that the Christmas special will be released on Christmas Day, though will that be in the same manner as the Season 1/14/40/Fred/Whatever in that it will be released Midnight in Britain of the 25, meaning those of us in North America will in fact be able to watch it Christmas Eve? That'd be nice, I'd be able to go back to my old tradition of watching Doctor Who on Christmas Eve, which I haven't done in six or seven years, only this time it'll be a new episode I'm watching.

At least it being a "low budget" show means that shouldn't need huge streaming numbers for them to keep it going.

I presume the March release date next year is to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the show?

Not really. Russell has said it would be crazy to have a 60th Anniversary, a relaunch and then a 20th Anniversary, so they wouldn't be making a fuss. (I'd imagine the non-TV material will make up for it.)

It wasn’t much of a sixtieth, as a relaunch it… had a lot of dependency on the past, and even if they did do something for the twentieth of the relaunched show not only would it make ‘season one’ even more redundant, but it would be awkward to do without Ecclestone at least doing an interview. He doesn’t much like the current producers.

IIRC, Moffat gave a similar reason for why they didn't do anything to acknowledge the modern era's tenth anniversary back in 2015.

It's an anniversary, it's supposed to be a celebration of the past. That's the whole point to an anniversary. Besides, anyone can jump into The Church on Ruby Road with no prior knowledge of Doctor Who and enjoy it just fine and from there the rest of the season. About the most significant connection to previous Doctor Who is Sutekh and UNIT, and they're presented in a manner as to be accessible to newbies, even people who didn't watch the 60th anniversary specials with Tennant.

Best way to answer this is to ask two questions, since you’re conflating two things.
(1) Were the sixtieth anniversary specials in any way actually functioning as such? More so than any other episode/season? What made them… special?
(2) Was ‘season 1’ presented as essentially a reboot?

And for bonus points relating to how you are conflating things (3) in what way would season one be an anniversary? As it was transmitted this year, 2024?
