Romulan Bird of Prey model: Was it lost or was it broken?

Re: Romulan Bird of Prey model: Was it lost or was it broken

It's Romulan. Of COURSE it was stolen! :D

Re: Romulan Bird of Prey model: Was it lost or was it broken

Actually, if I remember correctly, it was lost in a fire...

Re: Romulan Bird of Prey model: Was it lost or was it broken

But wasn't it relatively recently recovered intact? Maybe I'm recalling that wrong.

The batteries on the invisibility cloak finally expired and there it was - sitting in an old ex-Desilu storage cupboard all along!

:guffaw:
You know...I've always suspicioned that was the case.
Only one question...were the batteries Duracel or Eveready?

Re: Romulan Bird of Prey model: Was it lost or was it broken

After 40 years it kept going and going and.... ;)

But seriously, wasn't the model part of the big Sotheby's auction? (Again, I may be thinking of another one, but that's how it sits in my head at the moment.)

Re: Romulan Bird of Prey model: Was it lost or was it broken

Why start a poll for something that's a question of fact rather than one of opinion?

Re: Romulan Bird of Prey model: Was it lost or was it broken

What about the story that Wah Chang stole it, took it home and stomped it to pieces in his backyard? He was in a snit because he wasn't fairly paid for all the work he was doing for the show.

Re: Romulan Bird of Prey model: Was it lost or was it broken

I had read in an article that Wah Chang, the creator of the classic hand props, supplied several items "under the table" so to speak, for the series. Due to various union rules, Chang could not be commissioned to build items specifically for the show. However, if he just happened to have something already made that fit the need, that was permitted. Supposedly, he was commissioned in secret, whipped up the item needed and the dates were "fudged".

An "incident" concerning compensation for the Romulan ship led to Chang's smashing the model to pieces in a fit of anger.

I read this on a site devoted to Wah Chang's biography, but there's little practical way I can verify the sources of this anecdote. It may be no more than trash talk. It does read like the near classic cliche of the artist destroying his work after being cheated.

Sincerely,

Bill

EDIT: Looks like Hambone beat me to the same incident. I doubt , however, he stomped upon it. Chang suffered debilitating polio when he was quite young. He was forced to wear elaborate leg braces worthy of a first generation Mondasian Cyberman. More likely he took a hammer to it.

Never heard of the Wah Chang incident - all I heard that the model, due to its rushed production - was quickly built out of plaster of Paris, and was dropped by accident after filming and improper storage, which is why they redressed the D7's for use as Romulan ships beyond that point.

Actually, I believe they used the Klingon ship as a Romulan ship because the model department had invested quite a bit in the Klingon model, and they wanted to get their money's worth out of it.

The Romulan ship design was relatively simple. It could have easily been rebuilt from scratch.

Frakking tribbles ate it. Not real, you say? Bullshatner! The are a rare shrew that William Shatner harvests for realistic hair piece.

Or it was the goddamn robots, John!

It couldn't have been them robots, because that damn there tribble just leaped off of Shatner's head and started making mince meat out of that Bird of Prey model, I tell you?

Yup, that's right. There you have it. That 3rd option someone always has to chime in about not being there, but should. Happy now! :p

It WASN'T a "Bird of Prey." That only referred to the stylized insignia on the ship's underbelly. It was a WARBIRD.

It was lost, to answer your question.

Hmmm...I have read a fair bit about Wah and have not heard any confirmed tales of him destroying the model. I suspect it came to a more mundane and less dramatic end, possibly being simply discarded or some such...
