Roddenberry’s Genesis II and Planet Earth Coming to DVD

Yeah I've already pre-ordered both! Both great shows, plus I've always thought either or both of these could fit into the Star trek chronology, say just after WW III? It would just take a little tweaking here and there.

^Genesis II/Planet Earth takes place in 2133, just 18 years before the start of Enterprise, so it can't be in the Trek timeline. I'm pretty sure the "Great Conflict" (WWIII) took place sometime around the 1990s, so I've always thought of G2/PE as an alternate timeline where the Eugenics Wars escalated into a global nuclear conflict.

Well, as I said, it would take a little tweaking nowadays with dates an all, but for the first twenty + years it would have been a lot easier. So, yeah, an alterrnate time line works for me, that way we can still use the basis of GR's ideas here and flesh out the ST chronology?

Why must GII and PE fit into Trek? Why can't they stand on their own as complete and wholly different productions?

They can of course. But somebody had to make this TOS related? :D Besides, GR was always big on recycling Ideas, and it's fun.

Howzabout as a pre-JJverse story?

No, because the Abramsverse doesn't diverge from the main Trek timeline until 2233. Everything that happens before the start of the movie is the same in both timelines.

Ya sure about that? The Kelvin looks like some sort of TNG/Steampunk nightmare that doesn't fit much of anything we know about that period of pre-TOS history, so what's one more divergence between friends?

I note from looking at their site that they simply scanned 'the best available' copy for the dvd...no restoration work was done. Kind'a half-assed, isn't it?

Of course, having them on video at all is a GOOD thing...I just wish they'd bothered to go "the whole nine yards" and do it right.

As they are "failed pilots"..it probably wasn't seen by the "suits" as worthy of the full treatment.

Possibly, but it's odd that they're releasing them under an archival imprint then...usually that means a restoration.

True enough, but having waited this long for them to be released, I'll take what I can get. Will definitely be heading over to Best buy on tuesday to snag my copies.

Well, even WB doesn't really be confident that it can, utilizing the classic Trek font for the DVD artwork of Genesis II. ;)

I don't think you'll find them there. They aren't on BB's website, nor on Wal Mart's. I think you may have to order them from WB directly.

Well that's, IMO, a very silly bit of marketing strategy. Harumph.
