Just saw it.
I'm gonna be honest. I largely liked it. I don't know if this is meant to be a Suicide Squad kinda thing of Starfleet Intelligence, or just Section 31 under Tuvoks tutelage (if that's the case, that would suck, cause Section 31 should never be portrayed in a good light). But, I enjoyed it for what it is. However...if this were to be sold as a pilot, this would need some serious work. Not so much the CGI, which I really thought really worked out well, and I liked the action bits a lot.
But it's the character work, you know? We need more scenes like Sean Young and Robert Picardo in this. What the fuck was that Cardassian in there for? How is Lexxa a direct descendant to Khan? Why were the villains motivated to destroy whole planets? Who are the rest of the crews back stories - why are they part of this ragtag team?
Honestly, of the above, I could extrapolate that the villains might have felt emboldened by the Romulus destruction to exact their vengeance in some ways, feeling a post-war trauma surfacing, etc. but you need the rest in order to both formulate a team that you would want to spend more time with if there's a series afterwards, or at least have an hour and a half that works on its own as a fan-film.
That being said, seeing Chekov and Tuvok was really cool. Tuvok might be the best performance in the film, btw.
Overall, enjoyed it,needed more character work, glad I saw it. Gonna watch the other two now.
