Why do they use swords as weapons in the 24th Century? Such a primitive, limited weapon, even now and yet it seems fairly ubiquitous in SciFi in some guise or another. Is it to attract GoT and LotR fans? It’s so incongruous.

It allows for more interesting fight choreography. It's still a visual medium and close combat is simply more exciting than people ducking and shooting phasers at each other all the time.

why do Klingons use bath'leths?
because in close combat those kind of weapons are effective.
ranged combat, however, different kind of thing.

Well, one of the Kumquat Milan threads is explicitly about their relationship with the Klingons. This one is more about the Quokka Milage themselves

^ That was my thought as well. Had a general thread started first, I might have folded the Klingon discussion into that, but it doesn't make much sense in reverse.

I think (the in-universe) their continued use of knives and swords can simply be attributed to tradition. That seems like something that fits into the group’s age and spirituality, not too mention that continuing to rely on a primitive weapon when more lethal tech is available, is somewhat “romantic.”

Very interesting ideas. I was reading something about criticisms of the presence of 21st century artefacts in a 24th century tale. One of the programme-makers said they thought about that very carefully and since we, in the 21st century, still have ancient but effective technology now.....scissors, open fire heating/cooking, manual writing implements, QWERTY keyboard.... toilet paper...the same would be true for the 24th century. I thought that was rather nice.

As a character, he’s little ‘on the nose’ though. I’d’ve preferred a short, chubby, bespectacled sword-wielding warrior with thinning hair, poor cardiovascular ability and fallen arches....no reason in particular.

Bladed weapons remain effective in the modern world, despite all our technology.

A person wielding a knife is very likely to kill and is a genuine threat to police officers who wear body armour as the statistics show. Likewise in military combat a blade can still be deadly at close quarters.

Why not carry something reliable and effective merely because it's old?

Which strikes as ironic given that in Trek we see the opposite attitude. Phasers are elegant, precise weapons used by civilised people, but blades are typically used by, well, Klingons.
