I'd like to start a thread to discuss a fan-created starship called the Poseidon.

There are works of fan-created 3D art here and here on the Star Trek: Bridge Commander web-site/forum.

For those of you who do not know about Greek mythology, Poseidon was the god of the sea, water, earthquakes, and horses, son of Cronus and Rhea and brother of Zeus. He is often depicted with a trident in his hand. Roman equivalent Neptune. How a propos that the Starship Poseidon would have a triangular wedge-shaped primary hull.

Here are some specs and attributions taken from the above linked-web pages containing the 3D artwork:

SHIP SPECIFICATIONS=-

I'd like to ask for some feedback from this forum on the Poseidon:

How much smaller, in terms of overall mass or volume, would you say Poseidon is, compared to Sovereign?

It is unclear from the Memory Alpha article on the Sovereign-class as to what a standard crew size would be for the Sovereign. Any clues?

Do the secondary hull and nacelles of the Poseidon appear to be identical to the Sovereign? Is the primary hull the only difference?

Would the Poseidon be larger than Janeway's Voyager?

I once worked with the creator of the ship (ChiefBrex - he's ask that I not repeat his name) on developing an RPG based upon the first ship of the class - the Poseidon - bad in 2006. Sadly the game never took off.

The Poseidon was intended to be larger than the Voyager. The creator of the ship had a full tech manual for the design even, I think I still have it...

I was wondering if this Poseidon had a history behind it!

I'm not sure on the specs, but this ship looks like it could be a somewhat larger post-TNG analogue to what Kirk's TOS Enterprise was a hundred years before. My thinking is that after the Dominion Invasion, the Federation fleet was devastated from all the fighting. With many of their ships either damaged or destroyed, Starfleet needed to consolidate its R & D to rebuild its fleet and get back to exploration and colonization. I'm assuming they needed a fast cruiser much like Kirk's Enterprise, crew of 500, based on an existing design and components (Sovereign).

I'm assuming that Starfleet would not be in a position to just go on a Galaxy-class building binge. They might try to restore a limited Galaxy compliment, but Starfleet might be prone to "think smaller" and build a new fleet of Sovereigns and Poseidons via the economies of scale of shared design and components.

I love the Poseidon-Class & always wanted to write a fan-fic for it; or, design the website for any other prospective authors out there interested in covering the subject & include the technical manual on the site. What I'd REALLY like to see is an "M.S.D." for this class, to go on any websites in-future.

Feel free to use elements of this if ye like. I was bore'd:

The Sovereign-Class was originally designed as a replacement for the Excelsior-Class(which itself supplanted the Constitution) and was being developed in tandem with the Galaxy-Class to supplement it. For whatever reason, the project was delayed and it was further delayed after Wolf 359, when Starfleet decided it needed more gun, since the previous amount of gun had not faired well against the Borg. Thus, the modern-day Sovereign-Class starship was born. A fierce mid-size cruiser with impressive combat capabilities and servicable diplomatic and scientific abilities, the Sovereign was nonetheless a temperamental line of starship. Many technologies had been integrated into the design almost as an afterthought and non-replicable components were hard to come by. Most Sovereign-class ships did not see deep space assignments, and mostly hung close to the core worlds. During the breakout of the Dominion War, lack of proper support for the Sovereign and their temperamental technologies have made them the most infamous drydock queens in Starfleet history.

The thinktank at Utopia Planitia's ASDB managed to brainstorm the Poseidon-class. Using components and design elements from the Sovereign-class, a simpler, cheaper and more servicable design was built. Purposely more rugged and less intricate than the Sovereign-class, it uses warp drive components from more common and numerous vessels and has compatibility with a range of general components from different sources. This makes it extremely easy to service, even in the most remote and ill-equipped sectors. Technologies that were newer when the Sovereign-Class was introduced have been integrated more effeciently, resulting in better performance. The Poseidon's mission capability is far less martial than the Sovereign (it has a slightly less... imposing armament), but it is better equipped for a far better range of missions.

Starfleet Command hopes that with the Poseidon and Sovereign-class ships in service, that the ubiquitous ships of the Excelsior-class can finally be phased out of service.

-----------------------

The engineering hull appears to be almost exactly the same as on the Sovereign, though she has shorter nacelles and a rather smaller saucer.

Most of the crew counts I hear in fanon for the Sovereign range between 700 and 900, so a 500-person crew count seems reasonable.

I don't have an in-game ref on the armament, but it appears to be 10-11ish phasers and 5 torpedo tubes. Which makes it modest, compared to the Sovereign's 16 phasers and 10 torpedo tubes, I suppose.

Answer:
SHIP SPECIFICATIONS=-
Class name: Poseidon
Type: Cruiser/ Deep Space Exploration*
Dimensions:

Length: 425 meters - 343m = 82m 23.91% Larger
Beam: 105 meters < 133m
Height: 90 meters - 66m = 24m 36.4% Larger
? 20 Decks = 15*1.364 = 20.46 Larger by 5

Ships in service: USS Poseidon NX-78010

Yes Poseidon is larger than Vovager

Torpedo tubes seem to be in the usual pre-Nem sovereign spots, judging by the screencaps. 1 saucer-mounted launcher, two under the deflector and two at the bottom of the fantail.

Prometheus is a toy. It's basically Starfleet going "lol, I built a reverse-Voltron."

It can really serve no other function other than to have split-up sequences with heroic music, kick ass and reform.

I agree. MVAM was a simple plot-device for the episode. As far as I'm concerned, it would have been sufficient to have made the Prometheus a single part with the same basic design, and just make it remarkably automated to allow the two EMHs to run it. No MVAM was really necessary.

And to think the original concept had five parts.

This comes directly from ChiefBrex (the man who designed the Poseidon Class):
