I call bullshit.

Pint is volume.

Pound is mass.

If I have a pint of mercury it's going to way a heck of a lot more than a pint of water, which weighs a pound.

So take your funny little mnemonic and stuff it!

I always thought "pound" referred to price in that context, not mass - it is, IIRC, a British saying.

But even so, it clearly refers to beer, so your mercury analogy doesn't apply.

The mnemonic is meant to help you remember that both a pint and a pound are equal to 16 ounces -- a pint being 16 ounces of volume and a pound 16 ounces of weight. That's how I learned it.

It's worth pointing out that this mnemonic does work for water or anything "water like" but beyond that it's no different than saying "a gallon's eight pounds the world around!"

Since pure water weighs 8.3 pounds a gallon and there are 8 pints in a gallon, it pretty close for water.

But yes Iguana, it's a travesty that everyone doesn't use the metric system.

I believe this is the case. Although I feel that pints and pounds are related in that a pint of water is approximately a pound (although I could be wrong about that).

A pint of beer certainly doesn't cost a pound anymore in most situations.
