For emergency calls I have a pager, and a blackberry, and a 2-way radio. Yes, it's redundant, but what ya gonna do?

I worked at an airport that I had a pager for being all call in the case of an emergancy, otherwise they would use the cell phone.

They liked it because they could set the pagers up in phases and call in only certain groups, all groups, etc.

I don't know if they still do or not, but with SMS and the like I fail to see why a pager would even be needed anymore.

I received a pager and cellphone when I joined Lockheed Martin in early 2001 (which was, incidentally, how I learned about the 9/11 attacks - the pager beeped while I was in the shower to inform me that the Sunnyvale facility was under total security lockdown until further notice), but the service was discontinued in 2004 when text-capable company cells finally filtered down to my pay grade.

I'm so glad I don't have a carry a pager any more. Bloody thing was the bane of my life first year after qualifying. I even dreamed it was going off and so woke up.

I have that problem with my cell phone. I wake up three or four times a night because somehow the sound of it vibrating has invaded my dreams.

It's not pleasant.

Annoyingly, after doing on-calls from my cellphone instead of the pager, my ringtone created the same association. And since my ringtone is the Galaxy Quest theme, I haven't been able to watch that movie without constantly thinking someone's trying to call me!

It's better now that I'm not doing on-calls; I'm slowly desensitising!

I had the same problem when I did on-call support. I hated those pages in the middle of the night. Thank God my current job doesn't require it.
