Two parts 15 minutes, I imagine, given CBS’s guidelines... I’ll probably wait for part II but am looking forward to this,

The use what kinda sounded like the JAG theme in the score when we first see the ship was... a little distracting.

Fantastic first part. I had high hopes for this one and it's hitting all the right notes for me, although the captain's acting is a little weak. Loving their reimagined version of Starfleet.

Some of the acting could use a bit of work I feel, but I've seen a lot worse in fanfilms as well. I also really enjoyed the visuals. Looking forward to the next installment.

I thought it was very well done. They left me wanting part 2, so a win! Sure, there are some acting and digital backdrop deficiencies, but far fewer than most fan films. I hope Mr Henry et al do more projects down the line!

Got a chance to watch, and had some thoughts. I thought there was a polish on this one that is lacking on a lot of fan projects, but I still had some quibbles as well.

Pros:

Storyline was intriguing, and I liked the idea of the main narrative being framed by the investigative panel. It worked well within the confines that CBS forces upon fan films.

I really enjoyed the more “nautical” take on Trek, and the incorporation of a more NASA/naval look and style to the set and ship design. It’s honestly something I’d love to see a reboot of Trek embrace more. It was a fresh take rather then a rehash of the TOS look.

It didn’t preach about “True TREK!!11 and then promptly devolve into a giant space battle.

Acting was decent enough. I did feel like the Captain lacked a certain gravitas that he was trying to convey, but overall, it didn’t take me out of the story.

Overall look and style of the shooting. EC Henry has a pretty big following on youtube for his critiques of Trek and Wars design decisions, and it was nice to see him make something of his own. I don’t agree with all of his choices, but I think he pulled off his own style reasonably well. I do have some technical issues which I’ll mention in the cons section.

THE PHASERS. Loved them. They had punch, they had energy. They felt powerful. I wish we got more of that in current Trek design as well.

Music was good enough that i noticed there were some nice moments there.

CONS

I feel like I’m grading this one harsher then most , cause there are certain scenes that I think look pretty good, but I really want to sit down these guys doing VFX heavy fan films like this, and give them a color space and compositing 101 course. There are issues all over the place in this with bad green screen edges, clamped white values, DOF and color correction mismatches, etc. Normally I’d forgive it, its fan film, but Ive seen some of the other stuff EC Henry has put out on his youtube, and his bar is usually high. Overall I think there are some major inconsistencies in terms of the effects work in this, but its stuff that is fixable, which is why I am harping on it. It seems like they really nailed the all CG shots, but it was the integration of live action and CG that really hurt it. Especially the white clamping issues in the outdoor scenes towards the beginning. It was really noticeable. Now, granted, compositing is literally my day job, so I look at it with a much harsher eye, but the whole time I watched I was going, if only they had fixed this aspect of the shot, it’d be much more successful.

Sound was decent, better then a lot of other fan films, but there were moments that were clipped and a bit strange, but nothing like the issues First Frontier had.

Overall though, I enjoyed it and am excited for part two.

It's weird that there is some really great sound work here, and yet those footsteps at around the 55 second mark are terrible. Still, if a little nitpick is the worst you can say...

;)

Congrats to them for getting this out.

I'm not going to critique the acting other than to say it's a rare Trek fanfilm that's got uniformly good acting, so that's par for the course.

I like the look overall even if the footage of the actors frequently looks overbright in the greenscreen scenes.

The space and vehicle VFX are nice. The ships look good. But I'm rather sick of clouds in space.

I have to say I'm not super sold on the script. The framing device feels unnecessary and one hopes there will be some point to it in Part 2. In Part 1 it just chews up time; like the scene at the waterfront is a pointless. Cutting it would make the film better. I was bored by the time she sat down for the interview. It's 4:36 before we see the Pacific and it's prefaced by a line about the effects of the warp drive...which doesn't matter because we see the effects a few minutes later. The film would have played better if we'd gotten to the ship faster.

Hopefully the second half picks up the pace.

Nitpicks

The outdoor scenes sound very....indoors.

Why the hell does the pilot take off before the hatch is closed? Why does no one yell at him about this or the person hanging outside?

The climb into the ship is completely lacking in tension. She falls, hanging on outside the hatch. Then she's at the bottom of the ladder. Then she's inexplicably back up at the hatch. C'mon, shoot some inserts of hands struggling to get up to the next rung.

"Point our nose into the debris." Why? Is there a reason? If not, this kind of stuff is just filler that doesn't mean anything.

Lots of technobabble. It's one aspect of TNG-forwards Trek that I wish fanfilms would not ape so closely.

Science. "The warp drive accelerates the planet's breakup." Nnnnnope. The amount of energy to blow a planet to pieces would be literally astronomical, like on the order of hundreds of billions of kilograms of antimatter to overcome the gravitational binding energy holding it all together. That's like thousands of TOS Enterprises made of 100% antimatter slamming into the planet at the same time. So there'd better be some crazy upcoming explanation to why this planet goes boom.
