The fotonovels added things that characters were thinking in thought bubbles. That might help.

I've tried something, I don't like the idea to add something that isn't in the original dialogues, so I put only dots in the balloons.

Well, they don't add silly things, like Kirk thinking about an Orion woman. But stuff like this:

which is realistic, given the context. (I wonder if the script of the episode was consulted - scripts sometimes suggest reasons for characters pausing in thought so the actors can give the right expression (i.e. goofy, serious, sad, etc)
