Non-Canon Names for Canon Characters - The Complete List

Or maybe it's the other way around. He was Tiburonian, after all, not human. So maybe he was supposed to be Ton Sevrin but the Encyclopedia authors misread it as Tom.

Also according to MA, Ton was also Tongo Rad's name originally, before adding the -go part later.

https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Tongo_Rad#Background_information

So maybe either the name was given to different characters during the writing process, or its (theoretical) association with Sevrin was a mistake, getting mixed up with another character in the story.

Maybe that's why the first name was dropped in the final episode.

In the MA article @Tuskin38 referenced above, it also stated that Sevrin was intended to be a Vulcan in an earlier version of the script. (And 'Sevrin' certainly fits with the Vulcan naming conventions they were using at the time.) If "Thomas" is actually a misinterpretation from something else, it's possible that the character only ever had the one name created for him, in keeping with how they named other Vulcans.

The Memory Alpha note was added by @Laura Cynthia Chambers who hasn't been seen on TrekBBS or Memory Alpha since last year.

While "last year" is technically accurate, it's really only been just over six weeks since she was last here. So it doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility that she could return.

I've gotten into a very heated debate with Captainmike after trying to add the name Thomas Sevrin to Memory Beta.

Just thought I'd turn a very stressful situation for me into a positive by making it a source of entertainment for others.

I've deleted the link to the argument because Captainmike has now explained his reasoning to me, and though I don't agree with it, I am satisfied with it.

Not to be a party pooper, but doesn't this "list" already exist in the form of Memory Beta, the non-canon wiki for "Star Trek?" Actually, even Memory Alpha and Wikipedia usually mention the non-canon stuff.

The benefit to this type of presentation, though, is that they're all listed out in one place, rather than having to click through a bunch of different articles... if you even knew what to search on to find what you were looking for. (I mean, that's why it's a "list", and MB is not.)

Also, IIRC, MB isn't always the greatest at identifying which detail comes from which source, which this list does very well.

I have a question. In 2007, the ENT novel The Good That Men Do gave the designation T'Liss-class bird-of-prey to the base warbird model of the holodrones in ENT - "Babel One". In 2013 with the introduction of the Romulan faction to the game, Star Trek Online assigned the name T'liss-class Light Warbird to the bird-of-prey introduced in TOS - "Balance of Terror". So where did this Romulan name T'Liss come from?

Several "Romulan dictionary" webpages from as far back as 2002 claim that t'liss translates as bird-of-prey. However, I don't know where this comes from. It's not in the Rihannsu glossary from The Romulan Way and it's not in the Rom'lesta glossary from FASA's The Romulans.

"The only ornament in the room was a streamlined sculpture of the Romulan t'liss, the same bird of prey whose markings adorned the Raptor."
from Web of the Romulans

In my head, I think of the Romulan warbird/drone from ENT as the T’liss class and of the Vas Hatham/23rd century BOP as T’Liss class.

Virtual expansions don't count. They're not licensed. There are still some characters from the real CCG cards that are not on the list because I haven't been able to match them up with a character image on Memory Alpha.

https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Talk:Star_Trek_Customizable_Card_Game#Missing_characters

Fair enough. But at least they got names in some forms. Particularly Christian Slater's character in VI plus Borg designation for Lieutenant Hawk in FC and the Reman subcommander everyone has called Chagrith (despite it being another Reman bridge officer) in NEM.

I identified Chagrith as the Reman officer played by Robertson Dean based on the striped pattern on his shoulders. None of the other Reman images on Memory Alpha have the same shoulder pads. However, Memory Alpha mentions a Reman subcommander played by Michael Wickson who doesn't currently have an image, so maybe that's the real Chagrith. Or Chagrith and "Thalpet" could be the same character given two different names. Even the real CCG sometimes did that.

Hawk was given the Borg designation 1701dashEspace587M in the short story "A Private Victory" from Strange New Worlds III.

Seems a pity it wasn't continued officially (though it depends on what "official" and "unofficial"). The names they've come up really adds to the lore of both Alpha and Beta canon.

Haven't found copies of SNW short stories anywhere in Australia (yet). I did read The Sky's the Limit short stories briefly and it got me the idea of there being two Melbournes at Wolf 359 (neither being Hanson's flagship as the script gives him a Galaxy, not sure where the idea either Melbourne was the flag when the Excelsior-class was destroyed at the start of the battle and the Nebula-class variant (Melbourne-class?) was at least in the first couple of waves and I doubt a flagship would lead the charge --- unless you're Benjamin Sisko and have a ship with ablative armour and a hurry to get to DS9 before the wormhole is opened). I still can't find the First Contact novelisation because it is used as the official source for "U.S.S. Reliant" being at Sector 001 and Eiger's first name being "Inge". I found the junior novelisation and they used "Alice", which i think sounds nicer.

I also treat "Royse" and "One of Eleven" as separate characters, since they were portrayed by two different actors. There were at least two assimilated Bolian Borg Drones in Engineering so either one of them could've been the assimilated "Royse". Hint for "Lisa Azar" and "Richard Wilkins" and where they are, check Engineering as Geordi is putting Alpha team together, Wilkins is with Eiger at the main station while Azar is walking behind them and then out of Engineering as Geordi comments on the temperature being raised. It's also where "Suzanne Dumont" (Steph Silvestri) is, the one handing him his case before they leave. The CCG has the error for "Obarakeh" and "Joseph Travis", their ranks are given as Ensign on the cards but glances at their collars indicate they're either "lieutenant jg" or "lieutenant".

One thing I've done (which I've done for another fandom I shall not name) is what's called "Naming the Unnamed". I just find names for unnamed characters, ships, species and perhaps locations. It's not official or even unofficial. Just what I feel works. For example: the different names for David Ralphe's character and J. Patrick McCormack's character in NEM, the former being either Bezor (novelisation), Talvin (CCG) and D'Ral (CCG) -- he becomes Talvin D'Ral Bezor -- while the latter has either Talik (novelisation) and Noram (CCG) -- he becomes Noram (made-up middle) Talik. Valtane's novelisation name Masoud becomes his middle name: Dimitri Masoud Valtane. Dr. Nichols, with his various first names, becomes just Marcus Walter "Mark" Nichols (I liked Marcus). And the Andorian commodore in TVH, I made him Thelin from TAS (and expanded his name, same with Igrilan Kor and S'rrel). It's a fun thing I decided to do for myself.

I just noticed that I can no longer edit my list to add new entries since the TrekBBS update. My last post from 2023 still has an edit button, but the list posts from 2021 don't. Will this be fixed in the future?
