NHL Offseason News/Views -- Free Agency is Go!

If Cheechoo regains his scoring touch, perhaps with Spezza, that's a pretty effing good trade for the Senators. Michalek is a solid guy too. Plus they saved a bit of salary.

The thing I like about this is the possibility of Heatley forming some serious chemistry with Thornton, just in time for the Olympics.

So Toronto gets Kessel.

I don't mind the cost: two 1st round picks and a 2nd. Since the Leafs should finish on the verge of a playoff spot and not in the bottom 10, it's not that bad.

However 27 million over five seasons is more than I'd have paid for a 21 year old that had one good season thus far. Since he supposedly only wanted to come to Toronto, I'd have preferred a contract that was closer to 4 million per season.

As a Leaf fan, I'm split.

Is two first rounders too much for a guy who has had one good season and is chalked full of injury problems?

Or since the draft is a crapshoot anyway, do the Leafs win this trade?

Have you seen the Pens' newest draft pick?

We'll win again for sure!

Well, at the emergency meeting Judge Baum called for today, Balsillie modified his bid again, saying he'd keep the team in Phoenix for the season. It's something he should have said all along but still, better late than never. And, from from a purely practical sense (forgetting the BS politics) makes his bid hands down the best.

I really don't understand the whole ins and outs of the whole Coyotes situation (I know the bid for the team went up for auction, what's taking them so long, and some dude is the front runner in which he will take the team to Hamilton Ontario if he wins out) but what a sad state that franchise is in.

Hockey in the desert is daft. Always was, always will be. And Gretzky's losing record as a coach, not one playoff berth during his tenure, and his 8 million salary are indeed a sad footnote.

I'd like to see one team re-located to Canada and a contraction of either two or four of the weaker southern teams. That would improve the league a great deal on and off the ice in my view.

From what I understand, in Phoenix, the Coyotes even take a backseat to high school sports in the local paper. Yes, Dallas and the California teams do well but I doubt Phoenix ever would. They could win the Stanley Cup and the fan support would probably still be fleeting at best.

California had a team early on that went through the growing pains and built something of a market, so that when the two new teams were plunked down there wa sotential for rivalry there. that helped drive the market further. Dallas certainly succeeded. I still think Nashville can. Atlanta I can't figure out; maybe it is just that the team sucks, but the city is big enough to support the team and the arena is quite nice (I have a weird affection for Atlanta after seeing a game there.)

Atlanta used to be home to the Flames until they moved to Calgary.

It's entirely possible Phoenix could succeed. But not with Gretzky coaching.

Can anyone believe the season starts Thursday? It feels like it's just snuck up on us and that just the other day I was lamenting another choke job from the Chokers in San Jose.

I can believe it.

And I can even believe that the Leafs will be fighting for a playoff spot this season. Now, if only Burke could get one more bona fide first line player...
