NHL Offseason News/Views -- Free Agency is Go!

*smacks head* You're right. Sakic captained the 2006 team that we shall never speak of.

I have no idea what you're talking about. As I recall, men's ice hockey at the 2006 Olympic Games was canceled due to terrorist threats. ;)

Men's ice hockey? I thought they just decided to give it a rest for a change in 2006, to build anticipation for 2010.

The NHL Released the schedule for the new season today and the Winter Classic will be at Fenway with the Bruins and Flyers. That should be a good game and I look forward to it. As for the Sharks, I don't mind this schedule except for one thing. Chris Pronger goes east and the Sharks still have to play him twice. Is there no mercy in this world. ;)

Not a big surprise, except that I was sort of hoping it would be the Bruins versus the Canadiens. No matter. It's a great ol' stadium and a fun choice of teams. Go Bruins!

Maybe Ty Conklin should do the ceremonial drop of the puck. It seems somehow wrong to have an outdoor game without him.

The Habs need to get the Winter Classic sometime soon, as do the Wings, Leafs and Rangers. Basically, I just want to see them work through the O6 teams. ;)

EDIT: And by this I mean host one, not just play in one.

After making me think this would be a great off season for the Leafs, building up in net and on defense...

Oh Burke, what are you doing?

The Flames acquired forward Colin Stuart and defenceman Anton Stralman and the Leafs' 7th round selection in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft for forward Wayne Primeau and the Flames' 2nd round pick in 2011.

I liked Stralman. I don't think he got enough time with the Leafs. Plus he was paired with Frogren in Sweden and I really wanted to see them paired up on the Leafs.

And Primeau? C'mon. We've added enough "grit". Top six forwards please. The team we've got right now is one 2nd line and three 4th lines.

The Heatley sideshow continues...

The Dany Heatley situation took another strange twist Friday with Edmonton Oilers GM Steve Tambellini publicly announcing he's no longer interested in the disgruntled Ottawa Senators sniper.

Edmonton spent the better part of a month courting the former 50-goal scorer - a process that started after Tambellini hammered out a deal with the Ottawa Senators for Heatley, only to have the winger refuse to waive a no-trade clause.

Talks continued until Tambellini decided earlier this week that enough was enough.

The NHL is now investigating the long-term contracts given to Marian Hossa and Chris Pronger, under the suspicion that the players' retirement was discussed prior to the contract signings.

All of a sudden, those deals make more sense.

That's the only way they make sense.

And to think, the Islanders started this long term contract crap with DiPietro. How's that going for them? They had to sign two goalies this off-season.

Poor Dany Heatley. He tried so hard to win the NHL's coveted Douchebag of the Year Award, and Kane goes and snatches it right out from under his nose. :( I mean, Heatley's antics are pretty pedestrian compared to this.

(Even current 5 time holder, Sean Avery, will be hard pressed to out-do robbing and beating a cabbie over two dimes.)

New cover for NHL '10. :guffaw:
