NHL 2008-2009 Discussion!

And, Pittsburgh scores with two defensemen going two-on-one.

As well as the Penguins are playing, two defensemen going two-on-one can't be a good thing, can it? Doesn't that mean they were out of position?

Amazing how the coaching change totally turned this team around. Plus, the return of Gonchar didn't hurt. :)

Canucks win ten in a row at home (after going 0-6-3 at home in the previous 9). ;)
Tied with Chicago now!

I was at the game last night, Kesler is just a beast, and that last goal was one of the nicest I've seen in years.

I really think the way we are playing right now we can go toe to toe with any team in the league for a 4 out of 7 series.

To think the difference a month and a bit can make.

^ Yeah, I'm hoping they can get ahead of the Flames as well. That would be nice. ;)

And yeah, they seem like a totally different team compared to the way they played back in January. Hopefully they keep playing like this for a while longer.

I've really been impressed with Kesler and Burrows this year. I've been a fan of both for a while now, but they've really taken it up a notch this season.

EDIT: Oh, and I agree about Kesler's goal from last night's game, it was a beauty. So was Henrik's double spin-o-rama against the Kings. :D

It was the end of a PK, and Gonchar had moved forward to take a clearing pass. Eaton came out of the box, and joined Gonchar for the odd-man rush. So, technically Eaton was playing wing at that point.

Nor did getting actual first line caliber wingers to play with Sid. It's such a refreshing change from Therrien's system of creating lines 2-4, and then sticking Crosby with the leftovers.

And they took a step - or rather 2 pts - closer last night with an OT victory over Chicago 4-3. They have a good shot at overtaking Vancouver for 5th and a decent one at passing Chicago for 4th in the West!

I'd love a Chicago-Vancouver or Columbus-Vancouver series. Both would go some way to increasing rivalries in the West.

A Nashville-Vancouver series would also rock, as the two teams already dislike each other (while I like both of them).

I am still in shock over the Blue Jackets win over Calgary last night. A win was always possible, but a 5-0 shutout? Mason has not looked much like a rookie from what folks are saying. I am still so very new to hockey, and I doubt I will ever be a big and knowledgeable fan. However, Mason seems like he ought to be in the running for Goalie of the Year.

Definitely rookie of the year, without a doubt. He's playing unbelieveably, league leading 10th shutout if I'm not mistaken. I'm rooting for you guys though, I want a team that's never made the palyoffs to make them so you can experience what its all about. Plus Rick Nash is just awesome, I'm a big fan.

Malkin, Ovechkin and Parise (along with Mason) all make strong cases for MVP honors though. It's going to be a tough one to call this year.

I wouldn't be so surprised about Calgary though - I think they are very overrated and have one of the worst coaches in the NHL.

Agreed on Mason being the rookie of the year. There's no way he's gonna win the MVP award though. I think Ovechkin and Malkin are the two most realistic candidates for that honour.

And yeah, I'm a big fan of Nash as well. Hopefully he'll get to play in the playoffs this year (it's looking good so far).

As for Calgary... well, I've got nothing nice to say about them, so I'm just gonna keep my mouth shut. ;)

"Rookie of the Year", is almost a lock, it seems. The only other award though that I was even considering is possibly "Goalie of the Year", largely on the strength of those 10 shutouts and the team's overall performance when Mason plays. MVP is more than big each, given what Ovechkin and others have done, as you guys have noted. It's fun reading the articles, listening to teh call-in shows, and hearing the fans - as well as the players- comment with such excitement in their words. There's no lock yet, but last night was a huge step closer.

There are some truly dedicated fans here, who flat-out deserve this, maybe even moreso than anyone else... and are they ever flying high.

Goalie of the Year will go to Brodeur. I'd wager Ovie will get the MVP. It's decided by the media, and Malkin tends not to be in their spotlights.

No way Brodeur can get it, he's played too few games. I'd look for Mason or Tiim Thomas to take the Vezina.

Is there a games played requirement for the Vezina? If so, it's probably the same as the Jennings-- 25 games. Marty will just squeak past that requirement by the end of the season.

The league will almost certainly be looking to toss some awards his way, what with the Brodeur lovefest they've been throwing lately. If not the Vezina, then one of the sportsmanship awards.

I still can't believe the Wings lost to the Isles, at home. This is going to be one see-saw battle for first going down the rest of the season.
