New "New Frontier"? Maybe!

A friend has just been chatting to Peter David at his signing table at Salt Lake Comic Con and reports that there are "plans for a new 'New Frontiers' book that's in the works".

Could be! :bolian:

That'd be cool. I haven't read through the whole series yet (read the first four when they came out eons ago), but I'd like to see Peter David at least get a chance to do one more book to wrap things up.

Please be true...if only for a fitting finale.

Thanks for the scoop, Therin!

I will happily read the book if it is true, but won't be overly disappointed if it isn't.

I stopped reading NF after the one with Janos going nuts. It just wasn't my thing anymore. But I do believe that fans deserve a proper finale, so I hope for them this is true and they can finally have a true ending.

Well, it's true that PAD said it yesterday, and that is certainly a far more positive comment than previous ones, that always sounded like he wouldn't be contemplating one until approached by Pocket.

I would think that he has an idea for a story, maybe a finale for the series and he is working on the proposal for the story or either, he's been asked to sort a proposal for submission as they'll consider commissioning something if they like the idea.

Either way, it's not exactly something to get massively excited about as it may not pan out.

Well, I hope it actually happens. A proper finale would be nice, or even just another NF story. Maybe a new book would open up the possibility of even more down the line...provided PAD has some more stories he wants to tell. More Calhoun and co. is always welcome :)

NF's been on iffy ground for a while - I hope this opportunity for a proper end isn't squandered on just 'another' story...

I that maybe for the 50th anniversary Pocket can do some kind of all-series crossover and have new dedicated Klingon Empire, Corps of Engineers, New Frontier, heck maybe even Challenger novels.

Huh? So it's The End only for you, and the rest of us go without because you want only a finale?

Calhoun is still a relatively young man. The novel series has two starships and a space station populated with great and quirky characters. If PAD keeps writing, readers keep buying and Pocket editors keep commissioning, why does it have to suddenly end just 'cos a few fans haven't enjoyed the last few books?

I don't think any of the NF books have been "just 'another' story".

And it's not as though only PAD has to be the writer of any new NF books. Several other writers pitched in to make the short story anthology happen, and any of them could probably take up the baton if asked. As you said, Calhoun is still a young man, and Kat Mueller is still relatively young herself. There's potential for more novels as long as people can come up with good story ideas, and fans keep buying and reading the books.

Not at all.

However you look at it, healthwise, saleswise or ongoing vision for Treklit, it's likely that this is the last NF novel coming from Peter. I've said before that I think the series should be folded into mainstream Treklit (not abandoned altogether), so it would be great if Peter can finish it off properly.

PAD seems to be on the mend, and is still writing novels and comics, AFAIK, and making convention appearances - and do we know that sales actually fell for "New Frontier"?

The series moved to hardcover because of excellent sales, and seemingly only moved to trade PB (and reprinted in MMPB) because Pocket/Gallery weren't doing as much in original-to-hardcover any more.
